Safe conditions that respect students'dignity and permaculture

By Laetitia Craig | Project Leader

Over the past few months, our teams both in France and Tanzania have been working hard to bring this project forward. Much progress has been made, both at a concrete level on the ground, but also in terms of the content of the project, which has seen some additions.

In fact, thanks to the research work of our local team, we have incorporated a very significant dimension into the project. The project focuses now more significantly on the strengthening of the SWASH (School Water Sanitation and Hygiene) infrastructure. We are aware that in order to have a quality education, students must be provided with a good environment and safe conditions that respect the dignity of children

For this reason, the college is committed to providing a basic WASH service, which implies: "Drinking water from an improved source and water is available at the school"; "Improved sanitation facilities at the school that are single-sex and usable (available, functional and private)" and "Handwashing facilities with water and soap available at the school".

More concretely, the local team initiated an important step during the past few months, which concerns the identification of future students. During several meetings with families of the region, the Jabungu Foundation was able to identify some of the school's future students. During these exchange times, the Jabungu Foundation had the opportunity to discuss directly with the parents in order to raise awareness about the importance of education.

Another aspect of the project in which we have been able to progress is permaculture. In May 2022, the members of the “Bureau De l’Humanitaire” (BDH), a student association based in Strasbourg, went to Magugu in Tanzania to get involved in this project as volunteers for a month. They played an important role in helping the local team with digging up the soil, planting different types of plants, and irrigating them. They also met the future students and organized some sensibilization activities for them.

As far as funding is concerned, we are pleased to announce that we have obtained a good amount of the budget we need to implement the project. In fact, the Merck Family Foundation accepted our funding application and will be contributing the sum of €106,000 for this project, while the Humanis association will be financing €2000.
