Impact of Covid-19

By Elizabeth Appleyard | Program Administrator

Covid-19 has created many challenges for AIL staff and its program management. However, AIL offices and health clinics are open and the education program has been adapted to provide distance learning to students. Students are provided with education packs and access to a teacher via email, a hotline and in person if necessary. Radio Meraj is also broadcasting educational programs, as well as virus related information.

The workshop training program at sites is suspended but the Kabul office was able to provide 6 trainings for teachers prior to the virus lockdown.  In March, there were two teaching methodology trainings for 50 and 65 (total female attendance 33). They held a mini workshop in April on Coronavirus Prevention for 60 participants and three other minis on  New Methods of Teaching, Peace and the  Evaluation of Teaching Curriculum all of which were attended by teachers.

AIL is continuing to pay all its staff including teachers. There are some teachers in the community who have lost their jobs due to the virus , disrupting their way of life and financial security. One man said, "I am a teacher in one of the private schools and I lost my job due to the pandemic and subsequent closure of all schools. I have no other way to make a living. In fact, I live in the worst economic situation and my family has been hungry for some days. I realized that one cannot live on pride, so I ignored my prestige, pride and reputation and extended my hand of need to others, so that I could take care of my family and myself.  I would say that begging is harder than it is for me to die. Although, there are some food kits being given to people by merchants these days, some local elders, who consider themselves our supporters, are giving food kits to themselves and their relatives. A piece of this food aid is not being given to us."

 Thank you for your support.
