The Kabul office has been very busy. In May, they organized two Methodology Seminars for 80 teachers and two Reproductive Health Workshops for 79 women. All workshops were held in Panjshir Province.

The teacher training seminars were 10 days long. The teachers were mostly new hires who had never attended a teacher training event and were from secondary and high schools. Topics included: lesson plans, teaching methods, exams, grading, psychology, practicalities. The teachers used modern methods in the seminar such as group work, question and answer, games, role playing and research tasks. The teachers started out not even knowing how to make a lesson plan or set teaching objectives.

“I am Noorullah, teacher in a primary school. I graduated from the Teacher Training Institute and have taught Dari for two years.  I always wanted to be a teacher, but standing in front of the class for the first time I realized it is a hard job. I had many discipline problems in my classes. The classes were noisy and my colleagues insulted me. I started to hate the job and thought of leaving. The school principal suggested the seminar run by AIL. I learned a lot such as, how to keep control, relationships with the students and modern methods. Now I don’t need to leave the job and I can be a successful teacher.”

Recently, the Professor Sakena Yacoobi High School, Herat won an International School Award from the British Council. The awards go to schools that demonstrate a commitment to developing global citizens by embedding internationalism throughout the ethos and curriculum of the school. The Director of the British Council, Afghanistan said: “This globally recognized accreditation helps enrich learning & improve teaching by guiding international learning activities, from introducing international education into the curriculum to embedding it within school culture.”

Quality teacher training has been at the heart of AIL’s education program since the beginning. In 2018, 766 teachers (436 female) received training. AIL provides  high quality teacher training education in modern, interactive, student centered teaching methodologies. In the past year, 396 teachers benefited from this teaching training. Other teachers attended various workshops and conferences and learned about a variety of subjects including, leadership, good governance, good citizenship, reproductive health and violence against women. They share this information with their students enriching their understanding and capacity. 

"My name is Moshtari. I graduated from the English Department of the Education University. I used to teach English to the female classes in the high school. Last year, the principal of my school asked me to teach grade one of the male primary level. I had no idea of how difficult it would be. I applied the methods I used in the high school but I did not achieve the desired results as I could not control the class well. They did not concentrate on the lesson and were noisy.  I started to hate my class because I felt that the students did not like me that is why they did not learn my lessons.

Fortunately, I got the chance to participate this seminar. First I thought that this seminar would be the same of other seminars but found out I was wrong. The facilitator explained psychology and how this topic related to our class situation.Each each age group of students has its own characteristics and features and their own needs. We should teach according to the age group to help them improve. The facilitator mentioned psychological books for the primary level. I downloaded two of them and started to learn about the physical and mental characteristics of my children.

Now I am waiting eagerly to restart my teaching after off days. I feel strongly that I can bring positive changes as I know my students better than before. I am able to make my students interested in class by applying games and group work.”

Dr. Yacoobi joined with high level national and international delegates in the "Seville Commitment" - Supporting Localization Efforts for #SDGs.  She said, “AIL has provided SDG services to the most marginalized and disadvantaged for 25 yrs. In my talk I emphasized it is essential to work with local governments and provide resources to local NGOs who are doing good work. Replicate excellent SDG focused programs so No One is Left Behind!”
