Lambeth Walk Street Party

By Georgia | Manager

Brixton People’s Kitchen is bringing people together once more to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. We are calling all Lambeth Walk residents, alongside our local community to come and meet their neighbours, share a meal, and most importantly, have some fun!

We will be working with our surplus food vendors to run a pay as you feel, donation-based, pop-up grocery store where customers can pick some fresh veggies, and cupboard staples. We will be topping up the pop-up grocery store with fresh produce we have purchased ourselves. This way we can provide families with a weekly shop, for as little as possible.

There will also be music, and some live performances too. Plus, a hula hoop workshop for the kids, (and adults!)

Brixton People’s Kitchen will also be providing lunch for residents that attend- plus Be Enriched’s The Food Bus will also be taking part in the event to meet and work with local residents. Residents will be able to use the bus, purchase a wider variety of groceries, and pop up to the top deck to eat their lunch and have a cuppa.

Residents have signed up to perform at our street party, providing them with a platform to express themselves creatively to their neighbours. In addition, we have also asked local residents to ‘bring a dish.’ Each resident who brings a home-cooked meal to share will be reimbursed with fresh food to thank them for their participation. This encourages the community to engage with each other and share a plate, because as we know- sharing tastes better.

We will be using the event as a way to encourage community engagement within the Lambeth Walk area. An area that was once thriving with a plethora of local businesses and customers alike. Brixton People’s Kitchen intends to celebrate the history of the Walk through the street party and aims to restore the community feel to its former glory.

Brixton People’s Kitchen has worked with the residents of the Ethelred estate for two years. Most of this work took place in our community shop and cafe within The Black Prince Trust. Throughout our time there we supported over 250 households a week and worked directly with families to provide consistent and vital support.

Throughout this time we were not only providing a much-needed service but moreover building relationships with our community. We learned their names, asked for their stories, and learned about their unique situations- we listened when they spoke and responded directly to their needs.

Brixton People’s Kitchen is constantly aware of the struggles faced by the families we serve. It is absolutely imperative we continue to provide events and services that encourage the community to engage with us and with each other.

Community events such as these provide families and residents with new, engaging ways to congregate, create, learn, grow and have a good conversation over a nutritious meal.

Empowering our community starts with a full belly. The street party will ensure every resident has a hot, home-cooked meal that day, completely free. Plus, our pop-up grocery shop will allow families to buy much-needed, affordable food that will see them through the bank holiday weekend. A time in which a lot of food banks and services are closed.

Brixton People’s Kitchen knows that times are getting tough for most, and life may be becoming increasingly heavy. But together we can share the load and empower each other through food, fun, and a good old-fashioned get-together.
