BPK Poppin' up all over the place

By Kemi akinola | Team Player

BPK has been looking for a winter home for the past couple of months.

In the winter it is really cold outside and our little fingers go blue, even with the warm feeling in our heart from doling out our freshly made soup. So we have decided to partner up...

Week one - Partnering with the Brixton Pound cafe

We started off in Myatts feilds, where we borrow a kitchen space to wash and prepare the food. It was all hands on deck as we sliced and dice our way through a mountain of fresh veg. We even had some little helpers from across the road who we taught how to use sharp knives and make a apple laced salad. By 12:20 we were ready to transport the good s to the cafe. A vegetable ratatoulle, apple salad, grapefruit and poppyseed cake and banana bread with a fruit compot. At this poitn we relalised that the kitchen bike would not be able to carry all of the ood and so we called a taxi. It was here the trouble started.

Taxi firm 1, 2, 3 had no taxi's. Taxi firm 4 and 5 would send one in 30 mins. 2 Ubers booked and then cancelled. 1 hour later we finally got one to turn up. 1 hour! (#We really need our own transport)

Brixton Pound cafe is situated in the middle of Brixton and on a busy street and our volunteers had been busy flyering up and doen, so when we got thier the cafe was packed, with people hungrily awaiting the feast we brought in. A man came to the door and told us he was hungry, but he didn't have any money. He was so shocked when we invited him to join us and pleased to fill his belly with a second helping. His freind told us he was autistic and was very bad with money so this was a very good thing for him.  Another gentleman cried when we offered him food telling us 'he always tries to help others, but to be shown kindness by strangers had brought him to tears. Some of our friends popped down bringing people they met and others wandered in off the street. It was an eclectic mix of backgrounds ages and races.

Within about 1.5 hrs we'd run out of food and people had to be sufficed with a cup of tea and a slice of cake. Pretty good day. But then it was a race againts the sun set back to Myatts Feilds. This public park shuts when the sun goes down and theres no way back in. (#we really need our own kitchen)

We made it just in the nick of time and begged the Park warden to let us stay, promising to be super quick so he could lock up. With a couple of us at the sink and everyone elsse tidying up we were able to clear up in around 40 mins, patted each other on the back and headed off home. Job Done!
