Tigrinho made it back to Sinal!
By Johanna Barba | Sinal do Vale Team
This month, we had a bit of a scare when one of our cats, Tigrinho (which stands for little tiger, in portuguese), suddenly disappeared. We looked for him everywhere and after 5 days, we were beginning to think the worst. Thankfully he reappeared, a little skinnier and in need of a lot of attention.
These past few days we have been giving him extra food and keeping an eye on him. For now, he's going back to normal taking up his usual routines and playfulness! It is not very often that one of our cats disappears, but luckily they have made their way back to SINAL. Our guess is from time to time they want a little adventure!
Here's a picture of the famous Tigrinho.

Bolinho returns to SINAL
By Johanna | Project Coordinator
This month Bolinho made a great recovery and returned to SINAL after being kept isolated for several months. Once we used the copaiba plant treatment, he quickly regained health. However, we wanted to make sure that he was fully cured and not contagious before releasing him at SINAL again. But last week it was time for him to come back and rejoin his friends. initially, he was shocked by the change, returning back to SINAL. However, after several days he acclimated again, and has been playing with his fellow cats.
All the cats are happy and well-fed and no more cats have colds! We treated them all with antibiotics that seemed to cure them.
Last month we did a small fundraiser in honor the cats and for Thais' birthday.

Treating sick cat with Amazonian plant medicine
By Katie | Project Coordinator
Copaiba tree
This month we discovered how beneficial the Amazonian plant, Copaiba, can be for treating illness! Copaiba is an oil that comes from the pinnate-leaved South American leguminous trees (genus Copaifera) that has been used for centuries in indigenous medicine in the north of Brazil. Recently it has become more popular across the country for treating infection and other issues, yet it is by no means mainstream.
When one of our cats, Bolinha ("little ball") recently became ill with a severe infection, we decided to try using Copaiba to see if it could help. Usually only a very expesnive antibiotic can treat this kind of infection. However, in just two weeks with daily treatments of copaiba, Bolinha has made an almost full recovery! The vet was completely shocked at how quickly the cat recovered. We plan to use copaiba for all the cats to help boost their immune systems.
Additionally, two more baby kittens were found abandoned by our gate. They were very young. Luckily, we were able to quickly find a family for them as one of the workers from town had been looking for kittens. They are very happy in their new home! :)
