Major portions of the Sundarbans coastal region of Bangladesh are lacked of electricity and Sundarbans coastal communities are living in dark at night due to lack of electricity and increased kerosene price. School students of the coastal areas can’t continue their study at night for lack of electricity; as their parents can’t support them with required kerosene.
Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS) is an environmental development organization which has been trying to reduce the sufferings of the coastal people by supporting solar lamps since 2014 because promoting renewable energy is one of the focal sectors of the organization.
BEDS has already supported 3000 coastal families by giving solar lamp, solar home system, solar generator and solar battery. In addition five solar stations have been installed for community’s electricity facility.
Local government declared Banisanta union as a solar union. More than 75% families of the Banishanta union are now using renewable energy. Students of the Banishanta union are continuing their study at night with the help of solar lamp.
The organization is trying to raise fund from the donors for this purpose. So far we have raised 1,349$ from 27 donations and expect to draw the donors kind attention and get the total amount 15,000$ for this project. It is our expectation that by 2021 we will be able to raise the total fund for this project. We have been communicating with the local people regularly about the progress of our project.
