Aim Higher

Teens learn triage
Teens learn triage

A team of teens with the help of adult mentors journeyed to Honduras from June 12 - June 22, 2014. During this time the teens spent everyday providing humanitarian aid in the form of providing housing, clean water, food and medical care to the underprivileged of the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. They earned their own money to get there and sacrificed their time hanging out with their friends at home to serve.

The theme of the trip? Aim Higher. Encouraging the team to go outside their comfort zone and work where needed. Many of the teens choose to achieve this goal by working with medical teams. During this time they were taught to take vital signs, and triage the patients. Since these patients spoke a different language, many of the teens honed their Spanish skills at the same time. They were also taught how to decide if a child or sick adult needed to be put in the front of an 8 hour line. The kids also learned to depend on the locals who were helping us to pick out those in the greatest need. During this time 583 patients were seen, treated with medication, comforted and given prayers and dignity.

These teens will carry their newfound skills and healthcare training into the future and perhaps it will shape their future in caring for people in healthcare field and in life.
