Educational inequality is a critical problem in Mexico. Many Mexicans, especially those born in an environment of high social vulnerability, do not have access to comprehensive education. This situation is reflected in low academic results and high levels of school dropout - The average student in Mexico had the lowest reading literacy and math and science scores among the nations in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
For many young people, educational inequality means a barrier to access opportunities that allow them to live a full life. This problem represents the root of many other social problems that affect all Mexicans: crime, drug trafficking, corruption, poor competitiveness of the labor force, the perpetuation of cycles of poverty, socioeconomic inequality, among others. In Mexico, 21 percent of children give up education before they are 14 years old. While barely 50 complete middle school, only 20 graduate from high school, and only two become graduate students.
Despite the immense educational challenges in Mexico, we know that another reality is possible. In Enseña por México (Teach For Mexico) we believe in a country where origin does not determine destiny. Every child is born with unlimited potential, where access to opportunities should not be limited by the socioeconomic conditions of their family, or the environment in which they grow up.
With your support, through this donation campaign, and through our different allies and partnerships we have been able to further the impact of the organization in 9 states with 250 active teaching fellows in more than 170 public schools impacting more than 30,000 girls, boys and youth today.
