The Story of Grace

By JACKSON AMEH | Project Leader

When Home Becomes a Memory

When our team arrived at the Makurdi IDP camp, Grace (not her real name) welcomed us with a gentle smile that barely concealed months of exhaustion. Not long ago, Grace and her husband were farmers in a peaceful community in Benue State. Their land provided enough maize and cassava to feed their children and earn a modest income. They dreamed of seeing their eldest daughter finish school.

Then, one night, everything changed. Violence forced the family to flee with nothing but the clothes they were wearing. They left behind their home, their farm, and nearly every possession they owned. Today, they live in a temporary shelter at the IDP camp, uncertain of when—or whether—they will ever return home.

As we spoke with Grace, she looked at her children playing nearby and quietly said, "We lost our house, but what hurts the most is watching my children ask for food when I have nothing left to give them."

Her story reflects the reality of thousands of displaced families across Benue State. The World Food Programme warns that nearly 35 million Nigerians are projected to face acute food insecurity in 2026, while conflict and displacement continue to push vulnerable households deeper into hunger. At the same time, humanitarian agencies are struggling to meet growing needs because of funding shortages.

GoGreen could not ignore this crisis. Over the past months, our volunteers have visited the Makurdi IDP camps to provide food assistance and distribute essential relief materials, including household supplies and hygiene items, to families who have lost almost everything. Every distribution reminds us that compassion can restore more than a meal—it restores dignity and hope.

Yet, for every family we reach, many more continue waiting.

Your support will help us extend lifesaving food assistance, clean water, nutrition support for children, and essential relief items to more displaced families who urgently need help.

Grace's greatest wish is simple: "I want my children to smile again."

Together, we can help make that wish a reality.

Thank you for standing with the families of Benue.

To protect the dignity and privacy of the families we serve, some names have been changed. Their experiences, however, are real.
