Help Bring Clean Water To 10000 People In Twifo

Greetings once again from TRYAWCO to our cherished donors, we hope all of you are in good health. We are also well and have been working hard since October last year to improve the lives of our people by providing clean water to the identified communities with your donations.

Work on the additional four hand dug wells that started in the last quarter has progressed steadily. Work on two of the wells has been completed and about 500 more people in two beneficiary communities are now accessing clean water. This has brought to a total of six hand dug wells completed with donations received from globalgiving, contributions from the beneficiary communities and TRYAWCO. More work still needs to be done to get to our target of twenty hand dug wells and four KVIP toilets before the close of 2011. We are therefore appealing for more donations from you, friends and family. Presently we need two hand pumps by the close of September 2011 to be fitted on two additional well almost completed with concrete lining. We therefore hope this immediate need of two hand pumps shall receive positive response with donations from you all.

All the children, the aged and women in the beneficiary communities are grateful to you all for donating to this project to make it possible for them to have access to clean water. Little Adjoa Doku, 8 years, and the brother Kweku Doku, 13 years, are overjoyed with the clean water facility they now have. To them, walking long distance searching for water especially in the dry season, which most times means th water will not be clean, would now be a thing of the past. They say thank you all.

During a field visit to Ghana, I recently had the opportunity to visit ‘Twifu rural women and youth concern’. We travelled for 4 hours starting from Accra at 5 o’clock in the morning to get the opportunity to visit this wonderful project working in rural Ghana. We met with Matthew Aidoo in their small office on a busy street in the small town of Twifo Praso.  Matthew is an infectiously optimistic and enthusiastic project leader, a local farmer of Palm Oil who is committed to supporting his community through running TRYAWCO.  

The organisation is currently raising funds to dig wells in isolated farming villages buried deep in the countryside, where farmers and their families have previously had to travel long distances to find clean water. We had the chance to visit two of these villages and see the work that has already been carried out thanks to GlobalGiving donations.

We arrived at the villages and were greeted by excited children on holiday from school, who spilled out of their simple village huts at the sound of visitors. They eagerly led us to their newly built water pumps and we walked, surrounded by leafy coco plants, down narrow overgrown paths to reach them. When we arrived at the pumps, the children were keen to demonstrate their new source of fresh clean water and took it in turns to display their pumping skills for us. The delight of the whole community at their new pumps was evident as the village elders spoke of how much more secure they felt in the knowledge that enough clean water to support their community was now just a short walk away. They also spoke of how they had noticed a reduction in the number of stomach illnesses that their children had experienced, even in the few short months that they had had the fresh water in their communities.

What is clear about the work carried out by Matthew and those at TRYAWCO is that GlobalGiving donations have had a direct impact in these rural communities. An impact that with continued support they will keep making in the 10 villages that still have limited access to clean water, marked out to gain access to wells and pumps when they have the financial means to do so.
