You may know that many of our villages were suffering last year as their crops had failed from the lack of rain in 2017 - so much so that we provided emergency aid to over 4,000 families and their animals in the way of flour, fodder, and seeds. Families were left with only 10% surviving crops - can you imagine? In Darfur people live off the land, eating mainly what they can grow, and to work your field all year only to receive the smallest fraction of food from what you planted, was absolutely devastating. Tragically, many families we could not help told us that children died from starvation - yes in 2018.
But there is hope this year! We have received reports this year from villages like Mugabil and Kherban B, telling us how successful this year's rainy season has been. Village VDC Leader, Ali from Mugabil even claimed 2018 to have brought "the best rainy season in the last ten years". The agricultural production of consumer crops like millet and sorghum has been much higher this year, meaning about 15 sacks of millet per family and seven sacks of sorghum. These results have a huge impact on a family's ability to keep their children healthy, as well as improve their economic situation, increasing their income. But even with, what in Darfur, is encouraging news, the income from anything the family does not eat will be sold, and is their only income. This is what is means to be a subsistence farmer.
The successful agriculture season has also meant grazing and pastures are available for our goats, who breed during the rainy season, and an increase in kids has been seen - more milk for the two generations of beneficiaries in Mugabil and three generations in Kherban B! Delighted by the news that some of the worst years of agriculture production have been followed with a good year - a definite help to families struggling after the famine that saw the first half of 2018. This news enables us to put even more focus on our longer term projects, and so we are closing this project.

Help us build a new Kindergarten, provide clean water handpumps to villages, train midwives to help mothers give birth safely, empower women to earn an income, often for the first time ever, and donate donkeys and goats, of which we always need more.
