The people from our day care center in Flores “Club de Día” went together to a recreational facility to spend a day with good food, great music and lots of fun. But let’s start at the beginning.
We, the international volunteers who currently live at “Casa del Mundo” of Mensajeros de la Paz, got up early this day in order to give a helping hand in decorating and setting up the premises of the “Sporting Club DOAM”. The space we were able to use was provided of this organization on a cost free basis. We hence started to decorate the walls and ceiling of the room, arranged tables and chairs and helped the kitchen personnel from the day care center that was setting up everything for the later almuerzo – lunch.
Since the day before they have been preparing, cooking and baking things in order to serve delicious starters as well as Hamburgers and “Choripán” – a tasty typical Argentinian sausage in a French bread – freshly and directly from the barbecue as main course. For the later afternoon-tea they even provided different varieties of cakes in order to make sure that everyone is satisfied and full.
At around 11 in the morning the people arrived, the weather was perfect and everyone was excited about the day to come. Soon we had a great atmosphere where people chatted, laughed and danced with each other. The energy the people were showing was amazing.
Highlight of the day were the annual “Olympic Games” of Mensajeros de la Paz. For this six teams were formed who had to compete with each other by playing games like bowling, darts or for example can shooting. The points each person received were added to the teams’ total score in order to select the winning team. Every elderly was taking part, even the ones who have already difficulties in walking. But with the help of the others they were able to participate and score a great deal of points. You might imagine how much fun and laugher there was!
After the award presentation, some tea and cake we concluded this wonderful festival with more dancing to typical Argentinian music and chatting to each other. At the end of this day everyone – including us - went home with a smile on his/her face and thinking of how great it is to be part of a family like this.
