Putting Fence around the land for the protection
Mangroves are the natural protection of the coast. Naturally regenerated mangroves are now nightmare due to the human interference. But saving coastal people now mangroves have to be planted in the periphery of the Sundarbans. Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS) started this plantation since 2013. Through this continuation of the work BEDS have found 2 hectares of new land on coastal periphery and started fencing and planting trees for making forest. BEDS always work for the coastal community and believe that local community can make their own development. Following this concept the BEDS team always mobilize the coastal community for community based ecological mangrove restoration. The people are working with BEDS for their survival. They are put fence, plant different type’s mangroves in the selected sites. BEDS already covered more than 160 hectares of land in the coastal river bank side. Recently we planted 10000 saplings in the newly founded area. The coastal communities are responsible for taking care of the plants and day to day monitoring. BEDS always provide the logistic support to the community for this social service.

CBEMR: Saves coastal people

Community carrying mangrove trees
Once there were plenty of mangroves in the Sundarbans periphery that created a buffer zone which was beneficial for coastal protection as well as for habitat of the wild animals and birds. By the passage of time the mangrove forests have been destroyed for many man made activities. Local community harvests the forest resources and collects the seeds for using as fuel. They did that type of work without knowing the importance of mangroves.
BEDS is trying to aware the coastal communities for planting mangrove by introducing community based mangrove restoration (CBEMR). Now people are concern in mangrove restoration. They come and work together to from a forest. BEDS provide the logistic support like bamboo, net, rope etc. to them. Local communities are now participating in social mapping programme and planting mangroves in their riverside plots. BEDS think that if community is engaged in restoration programme the forest will be survived and from the forest they will be benefited more. New income will be generated and they can improve their livelihood.

Monitoring of the plantation plot
Mangrove plantation and raising it at the age of stable position is not a easy task. Natural re generation process of mangrove may hamper due to lot of natural and anthropogenic reason. That’s why systematic plantation of the mangrove require continues monitoring and maintenance.
BEDS has been working the for the mangrove restoration since 2013 at coastal region of Bangladesh. To protect the coastal embankment BEDS has been planting the mangrove. Only plantation is not the main work BEDS is doing. For the sustainability of the planted mangrove BEDS always follow the monitoring rules with written format. Survivability of the mangrove, growth and diameter of the mangrove are measured during the monitoring part. Moreover, the appearance of the new mangrove species as well as biodiversity were also counted in this monitoring sector. 3 months interval this document is prepared so that BEDS can easily monitored the process of a successful plantation of a restored area.
