CBEMR: Saves coastal people
By Md. Shamsur Rahman | Field Assistant
Community carrying mangrove trees
Once there were plenty of mangroves in the Sundarbans periphery that created a buffer zone which was beneficial for coastal protection as well as for habitat of the wild animals and birds. By the passage of time the mangrove forests have been destroyed for many man made activities. Local community harvests the forest resources and collects the seeds for using as fuel. They did that type of work without knowing the importance of mangroves.
BEDS is trying to aware the coastal communities for planting mangrove by introducing community based mangrove restoration (CBEMR). Now people are concern in mangrove restoration. They come and work together to from a forest. BEDS provide the logistic support like bamboo, net, rope etc. to them. Local communities are now participating in social mapping programme and planting mangroves in their riverside plots. BEDS think that if community is engaged in restoration programme the forest will be survived and from the forest they will be benefited more. New income will be generated and they can improve their livelihood.

Monitoring ensure success of plantation

Monitoring of the plantation plot
Mangrove plantation and raising it at the age of stable position is not a easy task. Natural re generation process of mangrove may hamper due to lot of natural and anthropogenic reason. That’s why systematic plantation of the mangrove require continues monitoring and maintenance.
BEDS has been working the for the mangrove restoration since 2013 at coastal region of Bangladesh. To protect the coastal embankment BEDS has been planting the mangrove. Only plantation is not the main work BEDS is doing. For the sustainability of the planted mangrove BEDS always follow the monitoring rules with written format. Survivability of the mangrove, growth and diameter of the mangrove are measured during the monitoring part. Moreover, the appearance of the new mangrove species as well as biodiversity were also counted in this monitoring sector. 3 months interval this document is prepared so that BEDS can easily monitored the process of a successful plantation of a restored area.

Mangrove nursery as a nature base solution
By Sanjida Yeasmin Shefa | Project Manager
Happy women with own raised saplings
Mangrove restoration and conservation is now one of the major activities that has been taken for the protection of coastal region of Bangladesh. BEDS also working with mangrove to increase the coverage of mangrove in the coastal region for the embankment protection. During the restoration activities the demand of mangrove saplings raised where the coastal people are destroying that mangrove seed and saplings for their daily wages.
BEDS introduced the idea of raising mangrove saplings to fulfill the demand of the saplings as well as create an alternative livelihood opportunity for the coastal Women. With support of BEDS 7 community-based mangrove nursery have been established. Women who used to collect the mangrove seed as cooking fuel are now collecting the seeds for saplings production. Different kind mangrove species saplings are now raised by then. This nature base solution has created alternative livelihood for the women and took participation in mangrove ecosystem conservation.
