A once barren land of coastline is transforming into a thriving mangrove forest, thanks to the combined efforts of the local community, Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS), Bangladesh and UNDP-SGP . The initiative, aimed at restoring coastal ecosystems, is now bearing fruit, offering hope for ecological balance and economic sustainability.
In the year of 2023, ten thousands of mangrove saplings were planted along the coastal area previously impacted by erosion and habitat loss. Today, those saplings are flourishing, forming the foundation of what is quickly becoming a dense, vibrant mangrove forest. Mangroves are renowned for their ability to act as natural shields against coastal storms and rising sea levels. The newly formed mangrove forest is already reducing erosion and providing a habitat for a diverse array of marine life, including crabs, fish, and migratory birds.
The mangrove forest is also proving to be a valuable asset for the local community. Fishermen report increased fish stocks due to the mangroves’ role as a nursery for marine life. Additionally, eco-tourism initiatives are being planned to attract visitors, offering locals new income opportunities. One of the resident [Rita Kabiraj] shared their experience: “Earlier there are a plenty of mangroves but for the developmental work many mangroves cut down. But now we are happy that we are planting mangrove in our baren land of river bank for making our forest.”
