Mangrove Conservation & Restoration in Bangladesh

Dedicated team BEDS and local community together have been restoring mangrove through regeneration and plantation for increasing the resilience capacity of the coastal communities of Bangladesh. Healthy mangroves are havens for biodiversity and are critical for climate action. They support the livelihoods, food security, and well-being of hundreds of millions of people, are critical for carbon storage, regulate water quality, and protect coasts. Yet 20-35 percent of our mangroves have been degraded or lost over the last 50 years. Urgent collective action is needed to restore damaged or destroyed mangroves around the world. If done properly, restoration can enhance coastal resilience, sustainable livelihoods, fisheries productivity, aquaculture, biodiversity, and carbon sequestration. Of the 1,100,000 hectares of mangroves that have been lost since 1996, around 818,300 ha of mangroves are considered to have high “restorable” potential, while other areas are considered less easy to restore and may be irretrievably lost to urbanization, erosion, or other causes. Sundarbans Mangrove Forest the unique habitat for diverse flora and fauna. Specially the mangrove tree species are so diverse and worked for the coastal environment as barrier for natural disaster and huge carbon sink. 

Last few decades the regeneration process of this mighty forest is going downwards. Global climate change, sea level rising, salt intrusion, agricultural expansion are the main reason behind it. But there are some other reason like the naturally grown saplings in the coastline get damaged by the grazing of cattle, shrimp fry collector and especially the coastal women collet the mangrove seeds to use it as cooking fuel as they barely afford another medium of cooking fuel. 

Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS) has been working since 2013 to solve this problem. BEDS has supported to establish 7 mangrove nursery in the coastal region of Bangladesh. BEDS given training the coastal women to use the mangrove seeds to raise mangrove saplings rather than use it as cooking fuel. Few of them got succeed and create a alternative income generation for her family. By seeing their success other women are also now interested to build a nursery and do the nursery business because of the demand of the nursery raised mangrove saplings. For the initial stages it require some support to the marginal women to establish the nursery and this is actually the season for set up a nursery due to the availability season of mangrove seeds is going on.
