Plant 40,000 Trees In Northern Rwanda

Dear Patrons,

Thank you so much for all the support that you have provided so far for our Rwanda forestation project.

We are happy to share with you the detailed report about the land 3 sapling planting activities completion. We planted saplings at location Rwanda:72PR+89P (Google Plus code). This area’s name is Buyoga. On Saturdays, the 19^th and the 26^th of February 2022, we planted saplings from 8 AM to 1PM.

Around 50 students in total from Muyanza Primary school participated in the planting during two days. Students enjoyed the activities of planting saplings.  We are kindly requesting you to see the attached photos and the video taken during the activity on the field. Rwandan youth Development and Voluntary organization volunteers ensured that the activities happened as planned, RWAYDAVO, ensured specifically that students are having enough skills and are confident to plant saplings, RWAYDAVO volunteers conducted teaching sessions (see the video).

The brief guidance sessions on importance of trees and the technique to use during planting were very important because students are too young and also we need children to grow up with the spirit to love trees, having information about the importance of trees. Around 750 trees were planted (98% were citrons and 2% Grevillea).

We deposited the organic fertilizer to the land by transporting it on head.  This transport was done by community workers and RWAYDAVO volunteers. Children involved only in tree planting. It was amazing to plant saplings with children and they were very happy, and the planting activity was very enjoyable and with so much socialization. Students at this time were asking many questions about the importance of this project in the future, and they were very happy to know that most of the trees will produce fruits that the community can eat and enjoy.

As we completed tree planting for land 3, the next step will be to use BRC brand fence, to protect the land in which the trees are planted from animals like goats, cows, and sheep, as well as from the disturbances caused by the humans.

After all these activities, we will be doing maintenance.  The maintenance will include to prune the area properly in order to keep the trees healthy and strong, Water is food for our trees and plants – that’s why effective watering is one of the most important ways to care and maintain, so watering might be needed during dry season. Also. as the soil compaction prevents water and oxygen from infiltrating to the tree’s roots, we will make sure that the soil is not compacted. We will be doing mulch about 6 inches from the base of your tree so that we cannot damage our trees roots.

It is our honor and pleasure to have you as partners, supporters and donors. On behalf of Rwandan Youth Development and Voluntary Organization, I am very happy to take this opportunity to thank you very much for all the support that you have provided so far for our Rwanda forestation project.

In this report, we are sharing with you, the progress of sapling planting activities for the land at Rwanda:72QJ+Q63 (Google Plus Code). This area’s name is Buyoga. On Saturday and Sunday, the 12^th and 13^th of February 2022, we planted trees on both two days. The activities started at 8 AM and went on till 12 PM. Together with 20 students, RWAYDAVO volunteers, and two community leaders of the village, we were able to carry out this activity successfully.

Around 7 am, RWAYDAVO Volunteers and project workers helped in digging holes deep enough to cover the tree's root-ball and to put the organic fertilizer. The organic fertilizer was transported two days before the tree planting by project workers, but on the day of planting, organic Fertilizers were not enough and RWAYDAVO volunteers helped also in transportation. Because the land 2 is not near the road, the transport done by head (see attached photo).

To ensure that the trees are well planted by the students who are really young, RWAYDAVO volunteers conducted a teaching session on the importance of trees and the steps that they should do before putting the sapling in the soil. Students should remove the root-ball from the container and place the tree in the hole having the organic fertilizer mixed with the soil.  In our experience, planting trees with children is a lot of fun. One reason is that they do not get bored, they enjoyed the activities, and they also socialized with other students.

The saplings we have planted are Citrons but at the edge, we have planted Grevillea. We have now completed sapling planting on Land 2 with a total number of trees around 600 saplings.  
For fencing Land 2, we have finished basic activities that will help us to construct fences. We will start construction next week as this week we are doing fencing for land 1. We will do fencing of the lands, because we want to protect the land in which the trees are planted from animals like goats, cows, and sheep, as well as from the disturbances caused by the humans. Maintenance is a key activity after tree planting and fencing. RWAYDAVO volunteers and project workers will ensure that maintenance is happening as planned to facilitate our trees to grow well.

To do this, we need ongoing funds for the regular maintenance of the saplings and the land. The maintenance will require maximum care and supervision to make sure that trees are growing well. This activity will also include pruning the area properly in order to keep the trees healthy and strong, Water is food for our trees and plants – that’s why effective watering is one of the most important ways to care and maintain, so watering might be needed during dry season.
