Plant 40,000 Trees In Northern Rwanda

Dear Patrons,

Rwanda Youth Development And Voluntary Organization would like to express my deep gratitude for all the support that you have provided so far for our tree planting project hosted at GlobalGiving. We are so glad to share that we are making a very good progress in our fundraising, and we hope to achieve our immediate milestone of raising USD$5000 for preparing the 5 lands for tree plantation by the end of December 2021.

I just wanted to take a minute to update you on the efforts we are taking for getting prepared for preparing the land and how our volunteers are working towards that.  For preparing the land 1, ten people are getting trained to prepare the land from January first week, and this will take 10 to 15 days. Due to the urgency of the planting saplings by the end of January 2022, we might increase the number of workers.  We have also finished all preparations related to the transport of organic fertilizer. The transport will be done by people who will carry the fertilizers and other material, as there is no other mode of transport for land 1.  To do this, we will get the help of 10 people who will be working for 10 to 15 days. We may also increase the number of workers depending on the progress of the work. For planting trees, we will involve primary school students and children around the village.  The supervision will be done by Field operation Manager together with RWAYDAVO volunteers.

We wish and hope that through this project, we will be able to make a significant impact in the lives of the people in the community, and instill the importance of trees in the minds of the people so that they take care of them on an ongoing basis.

On behalf of Rwanda Youth Development And Voluntary Organisation, I would like to express my deep gratitude for all the support that you have provided so far for our tree planting project hosted at GlobalGiving.

We are glad to share that we are making progress in our fundraising, and we hope to achieve our immediate milestone of raising USD$5000 for preparing the 5 lands for tree plantation by the end of December 2021.

I just wanted to take a minute to update you on the demography that we are working in. We work in the Burega sector of Rwanda, which has a population of more than 12,000 people. As per the Fourth Rwanda Population and Housing Census taken in 2012, the Burega sector had 12,730 people, and the bordering Buyoga sector had 22,171 people.

More than 90% of these populations are involved in agriculture, and their major occupation is agriculture alone.

Children are a very important component of the society, as they are the future citizens of the community. According to 2012 census, there were 4,977 children below 15 years of age.

The adult population from the ages 15 to 64 years were 7,215 in number, and above 65+ years were 538 in number as per the 2012 census.

Our main objectives in doing this tree planting project is to alleviate poverty from the communities, eradicate hunger, boost nutrition, climate change prevention in the region, increase the capacity of the community to address causes of socio-economic problems including natural resource management, strengthening social cohesion, and fostering the emergence of community-based activities.

Towards these objectives, the project will utilize the services of volunteers from the community during tree plantation and maintenance. Children from local schools will also contribute during tree plantation so that they know the importance of trees. In fact, we would like them to grow with the trees and take responsibility for the well-being of the trees.

There are three schools in the region that we work – (1) Burega primary and secondary school which has around 1200 students, Butangamundu primary and secondary school which has more than 1000 students, and Muyanza primary and secondary school which has around 1500 students.

In Rulindo district, 57.1% of the population are identified as non-poor, 23.2% as poor, and 19.7% as extremely poor. Compared to other districts in the Northern Province, Rulindo district has the highest percentage of extremely poor people as per EICV3 report (Integrated Household Living Conditions Survey of Rwanda).

We wish and hope that through this project, we will be able to make a significant impact in the lives of the people in the community, and instill the importance of trees in the minds of the people so that they take care of them on an ongoing basis.
