Coding classes with Ahmed!

We have a wonderful volunteer all the way from Sri Lanka who has been teaching coding to the children at Julio Otoni, as you may know from our last report, when he had just come on board. Classes have been progressing wonderfully - the kids are very excited and have taking a liking to Ahmed (who they keep calling "Amor" or "love" in portuguese, since they cannot pronounce his name!).
The kids find it especially fun because it is also an opportunity for them to learn English and teach Ahmed Portuguese, since they use google translate to communicate. Gradually though, Ahmed says they have been learning the logical language of coding, which he believes is truly a language of the future.

Easter at Julio Otoni!

This month we continued with our usual caopeira and informatics classes, and we continued painting the center with the kids and some special artist guests that helped the children and taught them different techniques! (photos soon!!)
We had a special event this month over easter weekend - in Brazil, like in many parts of the world, easter means holiday and lots of chocolate eggs! Unfortunately, these are usually very expensive, but thanks to all our donor friends we hosted a great day full of games and laughter, shared some love and chocolate! if you would like to see more photos please click here.

Julio Otoni December and January special events

This last year has been undoubtedly tough on Brazil. In the midst of a political and economic turmoil, it is the impoverished communities of the favelas who are taking the harder hit. Last month, we celebrated our annual Christmas party at the Julio Otoni Center. We made an effort to make it extra special as we believe it is important now to remind each other that our strength as a community lies in our unity. We celebrated with families sharing with music, snacks and games, and the children had the opportunity to talk to and take pictures with Santa Claus. It was a wonderful day full of laughter and good spirits, in the warm carioca weather!
It is also the start of a new year, and January means summer vacation in Brazil. We had a very special event – the children of the Julio Otoni community were taken to a special surf lesson at Recreio beach, taught by an instructor who was a surf champion of the country! The children had a great time in the water, warmer and calmer for this season, had snacks and learned to balance and play in the water. A big thank you to all of our supporters for helping us make events like these happen! who knows, maybe we have the next Gabriel Medina among our community ;)
