Help Sunny SHINE! Matching gift campaign!

Mickaboo Companion Bird Rescue exists to help companion birds, connecting them to the people who care about and for them. YOUR financial support allows us to continue our mission - and this week's matching gift campaign makes your gift more effective! Gifts up to $50 will be matched at 50% from now through Friday, March 28, 9 pm PT, by GlobalGiving while their matching funds last.

Sassy Sunny is one bird helped by your past generosity. She is a bright yellow budgie who lives up to her name! She’s spunky, full of personality, and refuses to let life get her down. But just a short time ago, this little ray of sunshine faced a devastating ordeal.

Before coming to Mickaboo, Sunny lived in a cage with other parakeets and cockatiels. One fateful day, she and her cagemates were left unattended outdoors. A predator—likely a rat or a cat—attacked through the cage bars, biting off a leg. Her previous owners rushed Sunny to a vet clinic. Upon realizing the extent of her injuries and the related cost, the owners surrendered Sunny to Mickaboo.

The vets weren’t sure if Sunny would survive the night—she had lost a lot of blood, and her tiny body was in shock. Her leg had to be amputated. All anyone could do was wait and hope. Against all odds, this tiny fighter pulled through!

Sunny went to a Mickaboo foster home to continue healing. Her foster mom carefully monitored her stitches and continued to give her medications as instructed. But true to her sassy nature, Sunny managed to reopen the wound, requiring an emergency veterinary trip. This time the remaining bone had to be removed. She spent two weeks recovering at the vet clinic before returning to her foster home.

As if losing a leg wasn’t enough, Sunny was also diagnosed with heavy metal toxicity, likely from exposure to a galvanized cage or unsafe bird toys in her previous home. While this condition isn’t contagious, it can affect her long-term health.

Despite everything, Sunny’s spirit remains unshaken. She has adapted remarkably to her new life—hopping around on her single leg, learning to balance, and even practicing flying. (Her wings were clipped temporarily to prevent injury.) Her cage setup has been adjusted to support her mobility. She’s found comfort in the company of other budgies, who come down to play with her on the floor.

Sunny’s journey is one of resilience. She’s just one of many birds at Mickaboo who have overcome incredible challenges. Birds like her receive life-saving care thanks to the dedication of volunteers, veterinarians, and supporters like YOU.

If you’d like to help birds like Sunny, please consider giving to Mickaboo today while matching gift funds can help your donation go further!
