Second chance education for orphans in Mbare

"Anna is a female aged seven who was enrolled at Chiedza after her mother failed to enrol her at a formal school. Anna’s class teacher realised that she had open wounds all over her body and referred her to child protection department within Chiedza. Anna’s mother was engaged, and she explained that the wounds come and go after using salty water as she has never been to a clinic all her life having been born in a family that attended a religion that did not allow them to visit a clinic. She explained that she did not even know how to approach a clinic. She indicated that her child has not received any immunizations or vaccinations. She explained that although she is no longer a member of that religion after her mother’s decision to quit, she was not sure where to start from to get a service at a clinic.

 Anna’s mother was counselled and referred to the local clinic. She took up the referral and went to the clinic where the sister in charge assisted her to get Anna treated. She even organized for Anna to get some immunizations that were still feasible. The wounds are now gone for good, and Anna is learning freely without pain or discrimination by classmates. Her mother was grateful for the encouragement she got saying her daughter can now grow a healthy child, unlike her."

Through Anna's story, we can see that children who are out of school are likely to be suffering multiple vulnerabilities. Bringing them to school provides a chance for children like Anna to be supported and learn freely.

One kind request, can you share our cause with your family and friends and encourage them to give especially during the upcoming Giving Tuesday! We use the money to buy books, food, furniture and pay school fees for children who were once out of school.

Dear friends and colleagues,

As the world is facing a lot of natural and man made disasters, more and more children are falling through the formal school system. Worse still, some children are in the middle of wars and other disasters and have no hope of ever going to school. It is in such circumstances, that Chiedza saw the need to support children who have never accessed school by 8 years, and or dropped out before completing school. The program started with less than 10  children in 2010 and with your support is now able to support over 200 children annually.

Some have exceptionally done well through the second chance education program, and of those 10 have reached university level. This is amazing, considering that these children had lost hope to make it in life. With the world becoming a global village and technology becoming the glue that connects communities, education is more than a social need but a must-have for children.

Thank you so much for being part of our story, for changing somone's life, for being the hope and light in darkness for these children. Kindly keep telling your friends and networks to support our cause. We still have more and more children who are out of school and needs our support. We use the funds to buy books, desks, chairs, buy food, pay volunteers stipends, buy uniforms and pay school fees.
