Our program updates over this past year described the impact of COVID 19 as it created severe travel restrictions. Personally monitoring our program and its participants is a core element that is vital to the success of the program. It allows us to see first hand how resources are being utilized and talk directly with participants to learn what is working well and what might be changed. It is virtually impossible to run this program without the assurances and safeguards that our personal supervision and close staff support provide. Unlike our programs in Phnom Penh , we do not have locally placed staff in the countryside that are of the caliber needed to oversee the operations of the entire program. Although this has always been a challenge, Mark’s frequent on-site visits to review our projects and speak with participants were essential to monitor and maintain efficient use of our limited resources.
Cambodia in recent months has begun to reopen with many aspects of life returning to a more normal flow, although tourism and business travel remain at a near standstill. We had hoped for increasing normalization not only in Cambodia but also in Thailand and Japan, countries that Mark must transit through to get to Cambodia. Now with the rise of the new Omicron variant of COVID, everything is once again uncertain. Consequently, we must reluctantly continue the “ pause” of our current operations of our Rural Assistance Program as we wait for COVID to subside, allowing for safe travel.
We are deeply grateful to you for your understanding during these challenging times.
Wishing you all good wishes for the New Year.
