Rural Assistance Program update
April 2019
Mark was in Cambodia in the final week of March and met with this year’s candidates for new wells. There are twenty candidates and nearly all of this year’s well recipients are women, many of them are widows. The day started out with a group meeting inside of a local Buddhist temple. The women gathered around to talk with us about their hopes and plans for how they will use the water from their new wells.
This year Cambodia is in the grips of a prolonged drought and the government has requested farmers to delay planting their new rice crops until the water situation improves at the start of the rainy season. The hand pumped wells which our program provides produce sufficient water for drinking, cooking and personal hygiene. These wells can also provide enough water to irrigate small vegetable plots and trees seedlings. However, we advise our farmers against trying to use their new wells to irrigate their rice fields (by using portable diesel pumps) as doing so can temporarily lower the water table, affecting the flow from not only their own wells but also those of their neighbors.
This year we plan to provide wells to twenty farmers. On average, the wells which we provide are accessed by four families. The owner of the well can use the water for maintaining a small vegetable plot and planting tree seedlings around his homestead. Neighbors can use the water for drinking, cooking and personal hygiene. This year’s twenty new wells will mean that approximately four hundred people will soon have access to a reliable supply of clean, safe water for their personal needs.
We are deeply grateful to the support of our generous donors who help these hard working farmers to help themselves move forward and care for their families.
