Dear Donors,
We are deeply grateful for your continued support of Joy for Children Uganda. In 2024, with your generous contributions, we took significant steps to address the critical issue of period poverty in rural Uganda, where limited access to menstrual hygiene products remains a major barrier for girls in schools. This issue contributes to a worrying 10% dropout rate among primary school girls, as many are forced to stay home during their menstrual cycles due to the lack of proper hygiene resources.
To tackle this challenge, we launched a training program focused on menstrual health in Northern and Central Uganda. We reached out to hundreds of girls, providing them with essential knowledge and tools to manage their menstrual health with confidence and dignity. The program included comprehensive training on menstrual hygiene, ensuring that the girls understood their bodies, how to care for themselves during their menstrual cycles, and the importance of maintaining proper hygiene.
Alongside the educational sessions, we distributed 200 reusable pads, Girl Talk booklets, and backpacks to the girls, ensuring that they had the practical tools they needed to manage their periods safely and comfortably. The reusable pads are a sustainable solution that can be used for several months, providing a long-term impact on the girls' well-being and enabling them to attend school consistently. The Girl Talk booklets served as valuable resources that offered information on menstrual health, puberty, and self-care, promoting empowerment and self-awareness among the girls. The backpacks helped the girls keep their menstrual hygiene products discreetly and safely, supporting their dignity and privacy.
The response to the program has been overwhelmingly positive, with the girls expressing gratitude for the knowledge and supplies they received. More importantly, the training has already started to make a noticeable difference in school attendance, as fewer girls are missing school during their menstrual cycles. This is a crucial step in ensuring that these girls can continue their education without fear of stigma or interruption.
Through your support, we are making progress in overcoming the challenges of period poverty in rural Uganda. However, there is still much work to be done. We aim to expand this program to reach even more girls in rural areas, ensuring that no young girl is forced to miss school or fall behind due to a lack of menstrual hygiene resources.
Thank you for your generosity and commitment to breaking the barriers that prevent girls from reaching their full potential. Your support is making a direct impact on the lives of young girls across Uganda, empowering them to continue their education and grow into confident, healthy women.
