Soap Making Project Report - Darfur Women Network (DWN)
The Darfur Women Network is deeply appreciative of its partnership with GlobalGiving, as well as the invaluable support from donors and the community. Through these contributions, DWN successfully registered a local branch in Darfur in 2021, achieving the following milestones:
This economic empowerment project has not only provided the women with a sustainable source of income but has also made soap more affordable for the wider community. The project’s evaluation indicates that it exceeded expectations, leading to recommendations for expansion due to its remarkable success.
Key Outcomes of the Soap Making Project:
Future Expansion:
Given the positive feedback and the success of the initiative, DWN plans to expand the project to benefit a larger number of displaced women and war-affected civilians. This expansion will create more opportunities for economic empowerment, community upliftment, and long-term sustainability.
DWN’s Key Programs in Context:
Sudan Conflict and DWN’s Emergency Response:
Since April 2023, the conflict in Sudan has dramatically escalated, with over 24.7 million people in need of humanitarian assistance. 6 million people are internally displaced, and 1.2 million refugees have fled to neighboring countries. Displacement, violence, and human rights violations, particularly in Janjaweed-controlled areas, have severely worsened the humanitarian crisis.
In October 2023, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and Janjaweed militias seized key army bases in Darfur, escalating violence against non-Arab populations. Despite these challenges, DWN, in partnership with GlobalGiving, has continued providing emergency relief through the Sudan Emergency Fund, offering critical support in the form of food, water, and essential services.
DWN has been active in Nyala, South Darfur, since 2019 and in refugee camps in Chad since 2014. In September 2024, DWN established emergency mechanisms in El Fasher, supporting those affected by the conflict. As the conflict begins to subside, DWN remains committed to long-term recovery efforts, focusing on rebuilding lives and fostering resilience, particularly through initiatives like the Soap Making Project.
Conclusion:
The Soap Making Project has proven to be a cornerstone of DWN’s efforts to uplift displaced and vulnerable civilians. It not only empowers women economically but also provides sustainable solutions that improve health and hygiene in war-affected communities. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the project was especially critical, ensuring the availability of soap while providing much-needed income for displaced families. In addition, DWN raised awareness and offered health guidance to help prevent the spread of the virus.
DWN is committed to continuing its partnerships, providing short-term life-saving assistance, and expanding this successful project as part of its long-term recovery and resiliency efforts in conflict-affected regions.
