Report:Soap Making Project

On behalf of the Darfur Women Network, DWN, I would like to thank you for your kindness, passion, and your generous donation. Without your contribution, the DWN could not provide economic empowerment services to displaced and vulnerable families in the camps in South Darfur, Sudan.

In March 2023, DWN in South Darfur, Nyala, had been preparing to scale up its economic empowerment for women and its soap-making projects. We scheduled our first workshop for May 2023. Sixty new displaced and vulnerable women were going to be trained to make soap and how to run their own small businesses.

However, on April 15th, fighting between the Government military and Rapid Support Force broke out. The main market in Nyala, the largest town in Darfur and where the training was planned, was destroyed amid a looting spree carried out by militias and paramilitary fighters.

In addition to death and destruction, the inability to talk to loved ones amid fighting is devastating. The DWN has no way of communicating to learn about its Community Center and its beneficiaries.

Some months ago, Sudan NetGen. Donated to DWN some wheat flour, and we gave them away to displaced families, but now, there is a risk to serving those who are in need in Darfur.

Nyala is in a deteriorating insecurity situation now. We are focusing on how to support Sudanese refugees until we are able to serve the civilians still in Darfur safely. Even though we must serve Darfuri women and families differently right now, Darfur Women Network, we will never give up the fight for empowering women from displaced refugees.

The Darfur Women Network applied for and was awarded $10,000 from GlobalGiving. This money allowed us to buy the lifesaving supplies of tarps, food, and soap for the refugees currently in Chad.

Dear Darfur Women Network Family,

On behalf of the Darfur Women Network, DWN, I would like to express my gratitude for your kind support, passionate commitment, and your generous donation. Without your contribution, the DWN cannot provide high-quality services to displaced and vulnerable families in the camps in Darfur, Sudan.

In 2023, we renewed the registration of the Darfur Women Network in South Darfur. The DWN has prepared for its next operation year to expand its economic empowerment for women/soap-making projects. We purchased the raw materials from the capital of Sudan, Khartoum, to be shipped to our operation center in Darfur, but the fighting has started. I hope that our order is safe.

The fighting between two armed forces that was started on April 15th, is still going on.

• At least 427 people have been killed and over 3,700 injured due to the conflict.

• Prices of essential items are sharply increasing due to shortages.

• At least 11 health facilities have been attacked and many are no longer functional in Khartoum and Darfur States.

• Civilians are fleeing areas affected by fighting, including to Chad, Egypt, and South Sudan.

• Several humanitarian organizations have evacuated or relocated their staff from locations where operations are not currently feasible.

Displacement of civilians has been reported in the capital of Sudan and in Darfur.

We hope for peace and stability soon and assess the need of people and work with our volunteers to serve our people who are affected by the consequence of the fighting. We praying for the safety of our volunteers, beneficiaries, our guard, and the women’s center. We don’t have information due to the absence of the Internet and communication as well as the insecurity situation.

We appeal to you to extend a helping hand to provide food, medicine, and relief supplies for our people in Sudan. We ask you to pray that God lifts this disaster from our country and people as soon as possible, and we appreciate all your support. May God bless your heart.

We would like to sincerely thank you for your generous donation to the Water Container Project through Darfur Women Network on Tuesday, November 29, 2022. Your support makes ourwork possible!

We appreciate your continuous compassion and support for the rights and empowerment of women and children, the survivors of genocide in Darfur who are women from displaced and vulnerable families living in displaced camps in Darfur, Sudan.
Your donation enables us to train four displaced women on the bar, liquid soap, and detergent as well as teamwork, women and children’s rights, reducing children’s work, and the importance of education to reduce dropouts.

Thank you for creating positive change in the lives of those who need it the most.
Darfur Women Network has conducted a comprehensive evaluation of our soap-making project,which is an economic empowerment project for women. The aim of the evaluation is to enable us to improve our work such as organizational performance analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats), qualitative evaluation, and quantitative evaluation.
As a result, the soap-making project is effective due to its ability to achieve the desired outcome or goal, which was capacity building-displaced women who have gained knowledge, technical skills, teamwork, and entrepreneurial skills.
Furthermore, the participants have made high-quality liquid, bar soap, and detergent, which has secured steady income for displaced women from selling the three types of soap made by the participants. Displaced women have improved the livelihood of their families. As a result, this project is sustainable. However, we need to tackle the challenges and scale up our project.
Eventually, this evaluation confirmed that this project has reached the peak level of performance because it has used the least number of inputs to achieve the highest amount of production and income (85% cost of operation, 13% administration, and 2% overhead cost and generate over 5% revenue).
