Support 200 Women Start Small Businesses in Turkey

Dear KEDV supporters,

Despite the more stable political context after the national elections in Turkiye in May 2023, the communities are still struggling to meet ends due to the very high inflation that has been going on for months now, increasing prices and the VAT of the most essential goods, increasing prices of energy, devaluation of Turkish Lira. These factors, and the cost of living crises brought with it, once again showed how important women’s micro businesses are in ensuring that families earn enough income to live a decent life.

Since our last report in June 2023, we were able to raise 1015 USD to give micro loans to 10 women entrepreneurs. The businesses that were supported were either homebased, in shops, or in the market place. They included knitting, running a fish, fruits and vegetables shop, producing pet toys, selling food supplements, and producing dried food, souses and jams. The women were able to buy inputs for their production activities and the items to sell with the help of the loans.

We see how vital the micro businesses are for low income women and the impact the micro loans have in supporting women in continuing and improving their businesses. The need for small loans is even more as the poverty is expanding in line with the increase of the prices and decrease of the purchasing power. In Turkiye, in the last 4 months, we have been working in solidarity to try and heal traumas caused by the destructive earthquakes of February 6^th. We also went through the national elections in May. The high inflation and the devaluation of Turkish Lira continued. These were all factors that impacted women micro entrepreneurs in their efforts to sustain their businesses.

Since our last report in February 2023, we were able to raise 1130 USD to give micro loans to 7 women entrepreneurs. The businesses that were supported were either homebased, in shops, or in the market place. They included knitting baby clothes, running tea shop, sewing clothes, selling clothes, selling handicraft materials, selling cosmetics. The women were able to buy products to sell and materials for their production activities with the help of the loans.

We are now closer to our target of USD70,000 to be able to support 200 low income women entrepreneurs, but we still have a way to reach it. The need is even more as the poverty is expanding in line with the increase of the prices and decrease of the purchasing power.
