Today we would like to tell you a story about a little boy who visits the Barnets Blue House.
At Barnets Blue House we help children who grew up with alcohol abuse at home. One of them is Lucas, who was eight years old when he first came to Barnets Blue House for help.
After a group meeting with other children, Lucas said: "Today it was very important". The caretaker of Barnet's Blue House asked what it was that was most important to him today. Lucas's answer was simple, but came from deep within: "I'm not alone."
And no, Lucas is not alone. And it's very important to us that he knows that now. The vast majority of the children who come to the Barnets Blue House experience through the activities and encounters the very first time that they are not alone with their situation and their problems. It is a great relief for them when they realize that there are people who are interested in them and can play with children who have experienced something similar.
There are on average two children in each class who grow up in a family with alcohol abuse. In total, about 122,000 children in Denmark grow up in a family with alcohol problems. High alcohol consumption in the home is a threat to a safe upbringing. Children from families with alcohol problems have a high risk of developing physical, mental and social problems. Some children react inwardly, others outwardly. Some become over-adaptive.
Alcohol problems are difficult to identify and even more difficult to discuss. It often takes more than ten years for a mother or father to realize that they have an alcohol problem. The key is to help their children while they are still children. Every third child of parents with alcohol problems also abuses alcohol as an adult. Unless they are helped to learn to deal with their harsh reality and experience different examples than what they see at home.
Help us to enable more life-changing stories like the one from Lucas. Through your donation, the projects at Barnets Blue House can continue to be implemented.
Thank you very much!
