Holiday camps create friendship, safety, and lasting memories
For many children, the school holidays are a time of joy, rest, and adventure. But for some, everyday life can be challenging, and the holidays may feel lonely or uncertain.
In Denmark, Blue Cross holiday camps offer children and young people a safe and welcoming place where they can simply be children. The camps provide structure, caring adults, shared activities, and a strong sense of community.
As Sandra Tramedach Junget, project leader for the camps, explains:
“Holiday camps are mainly about relationships. Many of the children do not have many friends in their everyday lives. At camp, they experience connection and acceptance just as they are.”
For 11-year-old Peter, who has attended camp for three summers in a row, this feeling of safety is especially important. Already on his first camp, he was a little nervous - but that quickly changed.
“I was a little nervous at first, but we quickly became friends,” Peter says. “I look forward to seeing my friends.”
At camp, Peter enjoys the shared activities and the familiar routines. Most importantly, he feels safe and accepted.
“I feel comfortable with the adults. It is nice to know that you meet some of the same people you are used to,” he says. “I do not experience bullying at camp. It is safe, and it is fun to be together with the others.”
During the camps, children take part in games, creative activities, trips, shared meals, and quiet moments together. These simple experiences can mean a great deal. They help children build confidence, form friendships, and create positive memories that stay with them long after the holiday is over.
The presence of trusted adults also makes a real difference. When children know what to expect, who will be there, and that they are welcomed, they can relax, participate, and feel part of a community.
Your support helps make these meaningful experiences possible. Because of donors like you, children can enjoy a break from everyday worries and spend time in a place filled with care, friendship, and encouragement.
Together, we can give children moments of joy, security, and hope - memories they can carry with them into the future.
