Support for Children in Denmark

We are super excited to announce the inauguration of a new support center in Vejle this upcoming summer! This support center, which is called Barnet Bla House, is the seventh support center in Denmark. The Barnet Bla House is a free and anonymous service where children, either alone or with their families, can take part in therapy groups, individual therapeutic sessions, communal meals and outings, and where parents can get support in dealing with their everyday life. 

In Vejle, there are no similar services for children who grow up in homes with alcohol or drug abuse. According to the Danish Health Authority, there are around 2000 children and young people aged 0-13 who live in families with alcohol abuse in Vejle. Further there are an additional 2000 children in the three surrounding municipalities. Therefore, we look forward to finally be able to help these children. 

The Barnet Bla House is free of charge for children and families and does not require a referral from the municipality. Families come to the house every week for a fixed period, where they are met by paid staff and volunteers. The combination of participating in weekly therapy sessions and being part of a social community with other families in a similar situation makes a difference, says Elin Hansen, Head of Professional Services at Blå Kors Danmark:

"We help to break the taboo that many children walk with. They are given the opportunity to put their experiences, thoughts and feelings into words, which is a prerequisite for them to be able to deal with the difficulties of growing up in a family where one or both parents have an addiction. At the same time, the social activities in the house help to give the children a space where they can take away some positive experiences."

Advent seaseon is just around the corner. It’s this season of the year again, when everyone bakes cookies, lights candles, listens to Christmas songs, spends time with their families and waits curiously for Christmas. Especially kids look forward to a great celebration with lots of presents. Unfortunately not for every family Christmas season is that much fun. There are a lot of families who can’t afford Christmas presents and meals. Especially this year was financially difficult for some families because prices increased.

We don’t want any child to not get the chance to celebrate Christmas, no matter how much money their parents have. To make this possible, Blue Cross Denmark started a huge help campaign for Christmas. So far already 8668 families have signed up for the “christmas help”. We are super excited to deliver gift cards for Lidl Denmark and gift cards for the Blue Cross Second Hand stores to all these families. Together we can support families to be able to celebrate Christmas together with their kids.

Another highlight for kids are the christmas camps. Between Christmas and New Year, Blue Cross Denmark organizes Christmas camps for children and young people who need a break from a difficult everyday life. These can be children and young people from families with alcohol and drug problems, poverty, mental illness and other social problems.

Blue Cross Denmark's holiday camps are for children and young people who would otherwise not take a holiday. In our Christmas and summer camps children get to make good experiences and get a nice community where they build friendships with children who experience similiar things.
