"I am not alone"

By Bianca | Project Assistant

Summer vacation usually means a lot of fun for kids. But for kids with parents suffering from alcohol or drug addiction school is an escape from an addictive environment. For such kids summer vacation is a challenge since they are stuck at home. This is where the Barnets Blå Hus fill the gap. The Barnets Blå Hus in Aalborg and Frederikshavn offered a lot of summer activities for kids and families. They welcomed vulnerable children into their community and gave them space to just be kids, have fun and build friendships with peers. Overall 2000 people participated at the summer activities! The broad offer of activities made it possible for every child to take part in something they liked. There were activities from going to Legoland, swimming, climbing, playing outside, doing handicrafts, playing mini golf and having a barbecue. But the absolute highlight was definitely the summer camp in Ønskeland. Staff, volunteers, kids and families altogether went on a one-week trip where they enjoyed the community and the activities.

Once schools in Denmark stared aigain the Barnets Blå Hus also opened their doors. Especially after the shutdown due to Covid-19 it was great to finally continue with the therapies and social activities. The Barnets Blå Hus aim to help vulnerable families by offering them individual and group therapies and social activities. For a lot of children growing up in families where they are surrounded by alcohol and drugs it is really important to see that they’re not alone in this. Rasmus for example is a young boy who attends the programs of the Barnets Blå Hus and told his story. Rasmus always felt alone dealing with alcohol related issues at home. Coming to the Barnets Blå Hus he realized that he wasn’t alone. He built friendships with kids who grew up in the same situation as him and he learned to talk about his situation at home.

The Barnets Blå Hus can only continue their wonderful work with your support. If you want to take part in changing the lives of vulnerable kids as Rasmus’ life, you are welcomed to help by a donation to this project. Thank you so much for your support.
