Give children the chance for a better future

Drug and alcohol abuse affects at least 122,000 children and in total about 630,000 Danes live right now or have grown up in a family with alcohol abuse. In a common desire to help children and adolescents growing up in families with drug or alcohol abuse, the Blue Cross Danemark in cooperation with Aalborg Municipality has built up two centers, that serve like counceling services and and as alcohol free environments where children and young people can meet and discuss with peers and take the necessary help to overcome the pain and the psychological problems that growing in abusive families with abusive problems causes in their life.

"We would like to announce that alcohol and substance abuse exists in all walks of life. It's about breaking the taboo and focusing on the problem - both from front staff and private individuals," says Bettina Poulsen,head of the Children's Blue House in Aalborg.

Maja Torp, Head of Aalborg Municipality's Abuse Section, hopes that cooperation will result in more children and young people getting the help they need.

Children who grow up in families with alcohol or substance abuse have an increased risk of self-development, and are often affected by a host of other problems such as depression, anxiety, sleep problems, etc.

"Our work is also largely a preventive effort. These children are coming back early in life. We must help them to process the problems and help them seize the opportunities that other children and young people have, "says Maja Torp.

As the children are the future of a society, supporting such projects is a support on creating a healthy society. So, thank you for your continuous support on creating a better world!

Holiday Experiences that Give Positive Memories

BC Denmark Summer Camp

A trip to the beach for a swim and ice cream or a whole day in an amusement park. These are experiences that can help to make a summer vacation pretty good, but it's just not all that have the opportunities.

Therefore Blue Cross Denmark organises again this year summer camps for vulnerable children in order to give them a break from everyday life. There are children who have parents with alcohol or substance abuse or mental health problems. There are also children with behavioral challenges or some who have been bullied. Camps are operated by approximately 150 volunteers.

“Summer camps are open to all”, says Sandra Tramedach Junget who aims to provide places for 382 children and young people to attend the camps.

"We all have a responsibility to see and hear the children here and support them to succeed. In the Blue Cross, like to make sure that they get the holiday they deserve, so that they too can get back into the classroom after the summer break and tell that they have experienced something special.”

Positive effects

A study has shown in the past that just summer camps can help to develop children's self-esteem and self-confidence, give them new friendships and the feeling of a community. Postive effects which go beyond just the camps.

For some of the participating children's camps are among the few experiences, they have to look forward to during the summer.

"Sometimes there are children who are allowed to participate in several camps, because their parents do not know how to arrange child care for six or seven weeks of summer vacation. Blue Cross offers children's camps, youth camps, as well as a riding campr and an adventure camp. The camps are spread all over

The camps are for children and young people in the age group of six to 20 years. There are still seats available on several of the camps this year and you can find more information in Blue Cross Denmark website.
