Kelly's Smile: A Journey Back to Health

By David Candaele | Casa Jackson Administrator

When Kelly arrived at Casa Jackson Hospital for Malnourished Children in March 2026, she was just two years and eight months old. She weighed only 7.59 kg (16.7 lbs) and measured 80.5 cm (31.7 inches) in height - dangerously small for a child her age.

Kelly was suffering from Severe Acute Malnutrition, a life-threatening condition that weakens a child’s immune system, slows growth and development, and leaves little bodies too fragile to fight even common illnesses.

She had recently been treated for the flu at the National Hospital before being referred to Casa Jackson for urgent nutritional rehabilitation and specialized care.

Kelly comes from a loving family who deeply cares for her, but like so many families facing poverty, they simply did not have access to the medical care and nutritional support she desperately needed at home.

The moment Kelly arrived at Casa Jackson, her healing journey began.

Over the next 46 days, Kelly received around-the-clock care from our multidisciplinary team. Our pediatrician carefully monitored her health, our nurses cared for her daily needs with tenderness and compassion, and our nutritionist created a personalized plan to help her safely regain strength and weight.

And slowly, beautifully, Kelly began to change.

Day by day, she grew stronger. Her energy returned. Her tiny body began responding to the nourishment and medical care she so urgently needed.

But what stood out most about Kelly was not simply the weight she gained - it was her smile.

No matter the challenges she faced, Kelly brought joy into the halls of Casa Jackson. She quickly formed sweet friendships with other children in our care, spending her days playing, laughing, and sharing moments of happiness with the little companions beside her.

Her gentle spirit became a light to everyone around her.

By the time Kelly was discharged, the transformation was remarkable.  She gained approximately 17.7% of her body weight in just 46 days, an important step toward a healthier, brighter future.

Today, Kelly has returned home stronger, healthier, and filled with new hope alongside the family who loves her so deeply.

Her story is a powerful reminder that malnutrition is not simply about food. It is about access to healthcare, support, education, and timely intervention. With the right care at the right moment, recovery becomes possible.

Because of compassionate supporters like you, Kelly received 46 days of life-saving medical care, nutritional rehabilitation, and love in a place where she was not only treated - but truly cared for.

Today, Kelly’s smile shines brighter because of your generosity.

Thank you for helping children like Kelly heal, grow, and rediscover hope.
