Dear Teachers for Rural Futures Supporters,
As we are all watching our world face an unprecedented public health challenge in the fight against COVID-19, GWI stands in solidarity will its members, followers and partners, and particularly those who are most vulnerable during uncertain circumstances like this.
Despite the current situation, we have been profoundly energized and honoured by the generous donations made to the Teachers for Rural Futures Project in the past months. These donations will directly contribute to the continuation of the programme, in a world where support for women and girls’ equal access to education up to the highest level is now more necessary than ever. GWI sends their heartfelt gratitude to the GWI contributors for their life-changing support.
Although the safety and well-being of everyone requires us to physically separate from one another, the GWI Board, Committees, and Office continue doing what we best: raising the voice of graduate women around the world and working for the preservation and improvement of women's and girls’ fundamental right to education. GWI knows that in crises, pre-existing social inequalities and injustice are often deepened. We are concerned that girls will be impacted the most by school closings in many countries. They are least likely to return to school and in many areas most vulnerable to drop out.
For this very reason, GWI remains engaged, motivated and committed to making positive contributions to rural communities in Uganda and beyond through the Teachers for Rural Futures Project.
GWI is actively working to continue this project with your generous support. We have plans to sponsor four new young women while following our five successfully graduated student teachers as they begin their professional careers, education champions and role-models for the younger generations of female students and aspiring teachers in their communities.
The current global challenge has only delayed the start of this new cycle of the Teachers for Rural Futures Project and GWI remains united and committed to pursuing our mission, thanks to the generous donations to the GWI Teachers for Rural Futures project.
