Teacher's Student Practice Made Possible by Donors

By Stacy Dry Lara & Alexa Grace | GWI Executive Director & Programme Officer

Dear Graduate Women International Donors:

The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated female teacher challenges globally. For Graduate Women International (GWI), this was particularly evident in rural Uganda, where we operate the Teachers for Rural Futures programme. Given that many girls have fallen behind in education during the past few years, the GWI Teachers for Rural Futures programme is more critical than ever. Simply, yet by all means, not an exhaustive summary, the goal is to increase the opportunity for young women in rural Uganda to obtain their teaching degree, increase the number of female teachers in rural Uganda, and decrease school dropouts. GWI knows that girls with female teachers have mentors and positive role models and are more likely to stay in school.

GWI currently supports three young women who attend Makerere University in Kampala. Each recently successfully completed their exams. They are heading back to their home communities now, where they will participate in teaching practice for the summer. Their success is possible thanks to donations from our GlobalGiving supporters like you and the grant programme from the City of Geneva. GWI continues to work closely with our Uganda Association of University Women and our students to identify additional young women to join the programme.

By supporting the GWI Teachers for Rural Futures Programme, you are facilitating safe access to education for many young women in rural Uganda who would otherwise not have the opportunity to gain a university degree. Their success becomes the success of their entire rural community.

You can help the GWI Teachers for Rural Futures programme by generously donating:

  • 25 dollars per month to provide books for one student teacher
  • 75 dollars to provide tuition for one student teacher for one month
  • 150 dollars to provide uinversity tuition for one student teacher for two months
  • 900 dollars to train one student teacher for one year

Contributions of any amount make meaningful impacts on the lives of our student teachers. We also appreciate you reaching out to your network and inviting them to donate as well. Your contributions matter, and we are sincerely grateful.

Donations to the Teachers for Rural Futures programme are appreciated HERE.
