Afghanistan faces an ongoing crisis fueled by political instability, economic collapse, and escalating humanitarian needs. International Blue Crescent Relief and Development Foundation (IBC) has been at the forefront of efforts to alleviate these challenges. This report highlights IBC’s critical interventions in Afghanistan, emphasizing its commitment to providing essential support to vulnerable populations.

IBC’s Humanitarian Activities in Afghanistan

1. Emergency Relief and Food Security
IBC provides immediate relief to communities facing acute food shortages. With millions of Afghans suffering from malnutrition, particularly among children, IBC focuses on delivering food packages and nutritional support to the most vulnerable. The organization also collaborates with international partners to ensure that aid reaches even the most remote areas.

2. Healthcare Support
Afghanistan’s overwhelmed healthcare system has left many without access to basic medical services. IBC intervenes by providing medical supplies, supporting local clinics, and facilitating access to care for displaced populations. Their programs prioritize women and children, who face heightened risks due to inadequate health services.

3. Support for Displaced Populations

Conflict and economic instability have displaced millions within Afghanistan. IBC runs shelter programs and provides non-food items such as blankets, clothing, and hygiene kits to internally displaced persons (IDPs), helping them regain stability and dignity.

The foundation also emphasizes the importance of adhering to humanitarian principles, including neutrality, impartiality, and independence.

The tailoring class in Afghanistan for women

After the Taliban takeover in 2021, the situation in Afghanistan drastically changed. In addition to political turmoil, the country faced numerous natural disasters, including earthquakes and floods.

IBC has been responding to these crises as much as possible. One of our recent ongoing projects is a community center in Afghanistan that provides vocational training for over 300 people in need of support and employment. Life has significantly worsened for women and girls, who have had their fundamental rights and freedoms stripped away and now find themselves isolated from both social and educational spheres. Economic disruptions have plunged the Afghan population into unemployment, with financial constraints such as cash flow shortages leading to a growing number of unemployed individuals.

In collaboration with IDRF Canada, IBC closely monitored developments in Afghanistan and established the Vocational & Educational Community Center (VECC) in Mazar-i Sharif to address these pressing issues. The center aims to offer educational support to the Afghan people, helping them acquire professions and contribute to job creation. In line with this mission, VECC initiated training programs in carpet weaving, tailoring, and carpentry. After a period of training, 150 individuals, predominantly women, received their certificates at a recent ceremony.

Nearly 100 women who completed the tailoring and carpet weaving training expressed hope in contributing to their families' livelihoods and forging new paths with their newfound skills.

IBC, which always supports women and girls so that they can exist in all areas of life and continues its work in this direction, did not forget the men who lost their jobs or had difficulty finding a job due to economic problems. Saeed Abbas, who completed his carpentry training at the VECC, stated that they were very pleased to have such an opportunity. He added that his father continues to work in his family and now thanks to his profession, he will be able to also earn money and support them.

The VECC, which was established in Mazar-i Sharif by IBC with the support of IDRF Canada, has graduated from its first term. The Foundation, which aims to provide a wide range of education in every field in the region, will continue its activities without slowing down.

Helping Afghan Families in Afghanistan

Recent developments in Afghanistan have brought about significant changes in the lives of women across various sectors. The landscape for women and girls, whose rights were previously constrained, particularly in education, has undergone a transformative shift. The dominance of the prevailing administration has precipitated crises, particularly economic and political, exacerbating existing challenges such as unemployment and financial instability. In response, efforts have been mobilized to address these pressing issues.

A Community Center was established in Mazar-i Sharif by an organization closely monitoring Afghan developments. The center aims to tackle emerging challenges by offering educational support and vocational training to empower the local populace. Various programs have been initiated, ranging from tailoring and carpet weaving to carpentry and literacy, alongside instruction in foreign languages and computer skills. Notably, a significant focus has been on empowering women and girls, who constitute a vital demographic in these initiatives.

Through initiatives like tailoring training, generously supported by international partners, approximately a hundred women have gained valuable skills to reintegrate into society and contribute to their families' livelihoods. Similarly, participants in carpet weaving training, alongside tailoring, are poised to become a new workforce, offering hope for economic stability in the future.

Recognizing the plight of men impacted by economic hardships, the center also offers carpentry training. Participants, like one individual whose family relied solely on his father's income, express gratitude for the opportunity to support their families post-training.

The Community Center aims to positively impact hundreds of individuals in its vicinity through its comprehensive training programs. The success of these endeavors relies heavily on continued support from generous donors, essential for extending assistance to those in need globally.
