Afghanistan has evidenced severe weather conditions during the last 4 years during the winter times. With a continuous conflict the poverty levels have got extreamly high. The UN reports suggest that one in 2 persons in Afghanistan cannot find three meals per day, and one in 3 children sleep without a dinner. If finding adequate food is becoming a problem, what could be mentioned of the wintersiation kits? Over half of Afghanistan’s children were estimated to be living in poverty. Even though currently it is summer, the winter season will be the next, and we shall be ready to support the communities, knowing that the poverty and the recent disasters have caused a huge turmoil for millions of the inhabitants. As winter sets in, a deadly combination of rising malnutrition, an unprecedented food crisis, drought and disruptions to vital health and nutrition centres is leaving more children vulnerable to illness and even death, and more families at risk of falling into poverty or being frozen to death during the nights.
Firewood, coal and fuel to keep everyone warm is hugely expensive when the temperatures fall. Particularly for women and girls who do most of the house chores – it is incredibly difficult to cope with washing clothes cleaning etc.
The severe winter conditions increase the risk of pneumonia and Acute Respiratory Infections (ARI) as families struggle to heat their homes and keep their children warm. Children living in poor households are especially vulnerable and require urgent life-saving assistance including winter clothing, blankets and fuel for heating.
As a humanitarian actor – AfD – continues its support not only with food and fuel provision but also with medical supposes and heating materials.
We aim at reaching 10,000 households in Afghanistan in 2024 with humanitarian assistance, to support their immediate needs.
Mohammad (a pen name given by auther), 67, is one of those working as a vegetable seller at the corner of the street. He received a support package through AfD in 2023. As a farmer without a source of income during the winter months, he says the food and fuel are vital source of assistance. “I feed 7 members of my family normally, However, during winter it is never enough to cover the costs of fuel and food at the same time. For a poor family like mine, the assistance provided by AfD has solved a huge problem for me,” he says.
Please stand with us during this campaign time to amplify the amount of funds we could generate to support families and households.
GlobalGiving’s July Bonus Day 2024 campaign will begin on July 10, 2024, at 09:00:00 EDT and will end when matching funds run out, or on July 10, 2024, at 23:59:59 EDT, whichever comes first.
Your support to AfD, and through us to the poor and vulnerable families in Afghanistan is a life saving act.
Please do not forget to donate on 10 July.
