Restoring Hope and Dignity: Daily Nutritious Meals for Homeless Elderly Through SERUDS

By Mallikarjuna Gorla | President

mid-day meal program for elderly women
mid-day meal program for elderly women

Dear Esteemed Donor,

Warm greetings from SERUDS!

We extend our sincere gratitude for your kind and generous support for the destitute elderly individuals in our care.

In 2009, after devastating floods hit Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh, many impoverished families were forced to migrate to other towns and cities. Tragically, many elderly individuals were left behind, alone and struggling to survive in the slums. Some had no children to care for them and, without family support, became homeless and unable to work due to their advanced age. Moved by their plight, SERUDS Charity launched the Midday Meals Program, initially helping five elderly women in critical need. Over time, as the need became evident, the program grew, and we now serve nutritious meals daily to 30 homeless elderly people who would otherwise be begging on the streets.

Our program is based in Budhavarapeta Slum, where we set up a kitchen to prepare and serve meals to these elderly individuals. We brought them together, encouraging them to gather daily for a reliable and nutritious lunch. Meals are served at 1:30 p.m., and the menu includes steamed rice, dal, seasonal pickles, sambar, chutney, vegetable curry, curd, and other nutritious items. This food provides essential nourishment and has had a remarkable impact on the health and well-being of these older adults, who now experience a renewed sense of dignity and hope.

After their meals, the elderly often rest in nearby graveyards, community halls, temples, function venues, or the homes of kind neighbors. This daily meal not only offers sustenance but also creates a sense of community and stability for these individuals, who previously had no such support or structure in their lives.

Thanks to your continuing generosity, we can provide these elderly individuals with both nourishment and respect in their remaining years. Your kindness truly makes a difference, and without your ongoing support, it would be challenging to sustain this vital program.

With heartfelt gratitude,
SERUDS
