Educate a Mexican Child Experiencing Poverty

We have some exciting news to share. Christel House Mexico is moving to a new campus that will include a much needed high school.

On a trip to Mexico City in 1998, Christel DeHaan quickly realized that impoverished children need more than clothes and food. They need tools to help them break the cycle of poverty. Later that year, the first Christel House learning center opened in Mexico City.

Christel House Mexico, which now serves more than 400 students in grades 1–9, has outgrown its urban campus. Soon, it will move to a new facility in Tacubaya, Mexico. The new space will include bigger classrooms, sports and recreation areas, green space, better transportation access, and—most importantly—room for a much-needed high school.

Refurbishment of the school is in its final phase and the new facility will be ready for the start of school on August 15. The new building will allow us to have a greater impact, adding grades 10–12, and better serve our current students.

Camila is a second grade student at Christel House Mexico. She lives with her mother and sister in a shared house. Her mother works selling goods on the roadside in Mexico City. The community where Camila lives is extremely impoverished and violence is prevalent. “Sometimes there is danger in my community. There is a lot of theft. People are held up and robbed. Criminals are watching all the time to steal,” she said.

Camila started at Christel House Mexico in first grade, and she loves her school. “Christel House helps my family in breaking the cycle of poverty,” she said. She enjoys learning English and computer skills, which she wouldn’t have the opportunity to learn at the local public school. She especially loves the art classes at Christel House. “They give us all the paint and crayons to do the drawings,” she shares.

In 7-year-old fashion, when asked about her dreams for the future, Camila said, “I want to be a doctor, teacher and police officer.” Your support is giving students, like Camila, the opportunity to dream. In a study that they conducted, they found that for every peso donated to Christel House Mexico, $3.30 pesos are generated to benefit Mexican society over the course of one year.
