Impact of Covid-19

By Elizabeth Appleyard | Program Officer

Covid-19 has created a great many difficulties in Afghanistan, especially because it is a poor country and has fragile health and education systems. AIL has had to close its Learning Centers but staff worked hard to adapt its education program to online, distance learning. Students have been provided with education packs and have access to a teacher by email, a hotline and in person if necessary. It is vital that students continue their learning and do not lose heart.  “It takes time and patience to gain acceptance for girls’ education, especially in rural areas. I am concerned that we do not lose the ground we have gained,” says Dr. Yacoobi.

Radio Meraj is playing a part in facilitating this distance education. The station is providing educational programming throughout the day and has shows particularly for the young.

Quarantine has increased the sense of isolation that many people feel especially women. Radio Meraj acts a source of information and a connection to the wider world. Meraj is providing information on the virus on an hourly basis and guest speakers from the health department and doctors on a regular basis. The station informs people of symptoms to look for, what to do and how to protect themselves as wells as national and international details   about the virus spread and relief efforts.

A man from the 10th district of Herat city had this to say, “Today the world is caught up in the Covid-19 situation.  I get all my information about the virus through Meraj Radio. This helps to keep myself and my family safe.  One of our neighbors had symptoms of the virus such as, a dry cough, sore throat and fever. My neighbor told me about his sickness and I contacted the Public Health Administration. An ambulance came and isolated him until he could get a Covid-19 test result. If I had not gained virus awareness from Meraj Radio, my neighbor would not have known what to do and could have infected others. Thank you Radio Meraj“

Thank you for your continued interest.
