From Despair to Dignity: Journey from Hut to Home

By Asif Jah | Project Leader

Dear Valued Donors,
Warm Season’s Greetings,

The devastating floods that swept across Pakistan last year brought unprecedented destruction, displacing millions and leaving countless families without shelter, food, or basic necessities. In the face of this immense humanitarian crisis, the Customs Health Care Society (CHCS) took immediate action, expanding its scope of work and realigning ongoing projects to respond to the urgent needs of affected communities—especially in the vulnerable region of Tharparkar, Sindh.

A Region in Need: The Challenges of Tharparkar

Tharparkar, a harsh and neglected desert region, has long struggled with deep-rooted poverty, malnutrition, and a critical lack of infrastructure. The recent floods have only worsened the already dire conditions, leaving families in makeshift shelters, exposed to extreme weather and deprived of essential resources.

In collaboration with the GlobalGiving Foundation, CHCS has been addressing these challenges head-on. Our efforts include the construction of deep-water wells to supply clean drinking water in areas where scarcity poses a daily threat to both human life and livestock survival.

Building Hope: Progress of the "From Hut to Home" Project

Amidst these trials, our “From Mud Hut to Home” initiative has remained a beacon of hope. Even as resources were diverted to emergency flood relief, CHCS has continued to advance this vital housing project in 2024. The initiative focuses on replacing fragile, weather-beaten mud huts with durable brick-built homes—providing families with long-term safety, privacy, and dignity.

These new homes are more than just physical structures. They symbolize security, resilience, and a fresh start for families who have lived in constant fear of rain, storms, and structural collapse. Each brick laid is a step toward a future where children can sleep safely, where mothers can cook meals in sheltered kitchens, and where families can live with peace of mind.

Our committed teams on the ground have worked tirelessly to construct and hand over dozens of these homes, with each recipient family expressing deep gratitude. The joy in their eyes reflects the transformative impact of this initiative—a shift from mere survival to sustainable living.

Looking Forward: A Renewed Appeal for Support

While we celebrate the progress made, the journey is far from over. Thousands of families remain homeless or trapped in deteriorating huts that offer no protection from the elements. The scale of need continues to grow, especially in the wake of recent climate disasters.

To expand and accelerate our work, we call upon our global donor community to help us take this mission further. Your support will directly empower us to:

  1. Build More Permanent Homes – Replace unsafe mud huts with weather-resistant, brick-built houses, giving families a place to call home.
  2. Expand Clean Water Access – Fund the construction of more deep wells, providing life-sustaining water for both people and animals.
  3. Deliver Emergency Relief – Provide essential items like food, clothing, blankets, and medical aid to those still suffering in the aftermath of the floods.
  4. Invest in Long-Term Rehabilitation – Contribute to broader development efforts including education, vocational training, and income-generating opportunities for women and youth.

Be a Part of This Journey

Each contribution you make, no matter the size, becomes a building block in someone’s new life. It means warmth in winter, safety during storms, water to drink, and food to eat. Most importantly, it restores dignity to people who have lost so much.

Join CHCS in transforming despair into hope, and huts into homes. Together, we can rebuild communities, restore human dignity, and create lasting change in Tharparkar and beyond.

With heartfelt appreciation,
Dr. Asif Mahmood Jah
