One Step towards a Free Job Market and Apprentice

Our goal at Salariin Kampuchea is to supply young adults in Siem Reap with English language, library hours and computer literacy classes as well as a Life Skills programme to help them enter the job market in Cambodia successfully. Over the last three months there have been many positive activities and achievements within our organization, which continues to work hard to make a positive impact in the community. Cooperation with the Hotel Industry In order to provide apprenticeship and work experience opportunities to our students, Salariin Kampuchea Organization partners and cooperates with a few hotels and restaurants in Siem Reap. Through October and November 2013, the Le Méridien Angkor hotel (lemeridienangkor.com), provided 23 students apprenticeships and work experience as service staff at the hotel. This was a valuable chance for our students to realize and understand work in a hotel industry. Our student, Hun Pitou told us about her work experience at Le Meridien, “I am happy and I like the work at the hotel because I can understand what it is like to work in a hotel and I can get experience communicating with the guests as well as coaching in how to do the service, set up food, and clear materials in the restaurant after meals. Thanks Salariin Kampuchea and Le Meridien hotel very much for cooperating for giving me the opportunity”. We have many exciting plans for the next few months. We will conduct a certificate test for our English and Computer students for their final courses. We will also participate in Angkor Bike Ride 2013 and Siem Reap Junior Soccer League. Additionally, we continue to seek out work experience opportunities for our students, as well as provide ‘Child Right’ lessons to our student to raise awareness of their rights and how best to protect themselves. Computer Students Present Their Assignment

Our goal at Salariin Kampuchea is to supply young adults in Siem Reap with English language, reading and computer literacy classes as well as a Life Skills programme to help them enter the job market in Cambodia successfully. Over the last three months there have been many positive activities and achievements within our organization, which continues to work hard to make a positive impact in the community.

Raising Attainment and Confidence in English Classes

In June we organized a Spelling Bee competition. This encouraged and motivated the students not only to improve their English language skills (especially spelling and vocabulary), but also to build their self-esteem and confidence. It was a hugely successful and enjoyable event for all. Student, Deap Sophary, shared her feelings about the competition, “I am very happy to join this completion as it can make me competitive and working hard. Furthermore, I can improve my English vocabulary, remembering and listening skill”

Skills for Work Visits

Students on the Life Skills programme got some real, hands-on experience in local hotels in recent months. In June and July respectively, they went on visits to the Shintamani Hotel and the Pacific Hotel. Here staff held Q&A sessions regarding job requirements and work in the hotel and tourism industry, as well as workshops on preparing for interviews and how to write CVs and cover letters. The experience proved invaluable, as tourism continues to grow as one of the biggest employers in Siem Reap.

Increasing IT Skills

Our students continue to train in the use of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, internet and email – all essential skills for the modern workplace. They have also been carrying out research assignments and conducting class presentations. Socheata tells her story about Computer classes with Salariin Kampuchea, “It encourages and motivates me to maintain solidarity and team work in my class. The computer training also taught me more knowledge through research”

Fun and Study in our Libraries

Our librarians continue to work hard to create a welcoming and fun environment for our students to spend time. Reading clubs, quizzes, games and supported study sessions have proved beneficial to many young people in the area.

Onwards and Upwards

We have many exciting plans for the next few months. We will conduct Child Protection Training for our students, to raise awareness of their rights and how best to protect themselves – a vital learning experience for the young people of Cambodia. Additionally, in our Life Skills programme, we will see further workplace visits, as well as presentations from graduates to encourage others to join the programme for the coming year.

Continued Improvement at Salariin Kampuchea

Certificate party celebration

Our aim at Salariin Kampuchea is to provide high quality, free-of-charge, non-formal education to children and youth from disadvantaged families in Siem Reap. The quality of education we supply inspires youth and their families to follow their own dreams and enhance their standard of living. We supply young adults in Siem Reap with English language and computer literacy skills, reading improvement as well as a life skill program to help them enter the job market in Cambodia successfully.

English project

There are 15 new students enrolled in our English program. In total there are 198 students attending in our schools. In February, we conducted and celebrated a certificate party where 92 students from the English program received their Certificates from the Let’s Go 3, Let’s Go 6 and Pre-intermediate classes.

Life skill project

As in February we celebrated a certificate party, 18 former life skill students received their certificates. We organized a field trip for our life skill students in March. Our life skill students visited our partner hotel, Soria Moria Boutique Hotel to see different jobs in a real work situation. The hotel staff were introduced to the students and then they were shown different departments. The students asked lots of questions. Furthermore, as we cooperate with Youth Employment Service Centre (YES) in May our life skill students visited their center for job vacancy and job interview practice.

Computer Class

In the certificate party, there were 53 former computer students received their certificate. Recently there are 8 computer classes with 66 students attending in our program. One of our computer students became a computer teacher and youth leader with an organization in Siem Reap.

Library project

In the daily library hours, our librarians conducted different activities with external students and internal students. Our librarians did traffic lessons, matched label story comprehension, arranged group reading as well as supported individual weaker students from English classes and computer classes. They also conducted lending books to the students.

Football project

Our football students participated in the Globalteer Siem Reap Junior Soccer League. As a result, our football teams, the U18’s were placed in number two and the U14’s placed number one in their division of the league. They are very proud of their teams for the success. One of our football students became a football coach with Globalteer organization. Furthermore, by supporting from Globalteer our football students were trained twice a month. To celebrate the king’s birthday, Sihamoni Globalteer Organization organized a tournament between Siem Reap football teams and Poipet teams. Luckily, there were six of our students selected to attend in the tournament.

Future

In the next three months, we would like to conduct a Spelling Bee competition program for English students. We also plan to visit two hotels and two vocational training centers in Siem Reap for the life skill students. They will be able to see different jobs in a real work situation. We also plan to make an interview practice and arrange final test for current life skill students.
