Our aim at Salariin Kampuchea is to provide high quality, free-of-charge, non-formal education to children and youth from disadvantaged families in Siem Reap. The quality of education we supply inspires youth and their families to follow their own dreams and enhance their standard of living. We supply young adults in Siem Reap with English language and computer literacy skills, reading improvement as well as a life skill program to help them enter the job market in Cambodia successfully.
English project
At the end of January, 2013, 183 students were attending our school. 102 students from different levels sat for their Certificate Test. As a result, 92 students passed the test and they will receive their Certificate. Congratulations to those for their hard work.
Life skill project
29 students in the life skill class participated in a follow up workshop in Sexual Education in October funded through GlobalGiving. As a result, our students graduated from the workshop and received certificates from the Karol & Setha program. In addition to attending life skills and career lessons, the students practiced cooking skills as well as attending a Domestic Violence Workshop provided by the Women’s Resource Center.
Computer Class
There were 8 computer classes for both schools comprising 93 students. 3 classes graduated and 31 students each received a Certificate. We have replaced those students so that we still have 8 classes.
Library project
Our librarians conducted different activities with not only our school students but with other children and teenagers from the surrounding communities. Reading club, reading comprehension and quiz games were popular for external and internal students. On average, 23 students came to each library time.
Football project
With support from our volunteers, five football teams were started at our school, two Under 15 teams, and three Under 18 teams. There are 59 football players making up these teams. The teams consist of three boy’s teams and two girl’s teams. They are coached every Sunday from October to December in preparation of the tournament. In January 2013, the Siem Reap Senior Soccer League started and it was very well organized by Globalteer. It will run to the end of March. The football students have had a great time playing football, even though they have lost some games, but they have also won some games.
Future
In the next three months, we would like to continue to participate in the Siem Reap Senior Soccer League for the football project, visit a hotel for the life skill students to see different jobs in a real work situation as well as give a Certificate Party for the English, Computer and Life Skills Classes.
We would like to thank all donors who supported us though GlobalGiving. With the help of our partners at GlobalGiving and you, we hope to keep building on this and moving forward with our non-formal education programme.
Warm regards,
The Salariin Kampuchea Team
