We are grateful to our generous Peruvian Hearts family who continue to support our PH scholars during this challenging time in Peru. Our scholars continue to work hard day after day, studying for exams, researching and writing essays, and getting closer to accomplishing one of their goals; to graduate from university with a professional degree. The girls continue to grow stronger as individual women and work regularly with our Peruvian Hearts psychologist, Miriam, to help them overcome past and present obstacles that present themselves. We are excited to share some updates of three of our PH scholars: Gloria, Maribel, and Mafi, who continue to excel in their studies and career path and are getting closer one day at a time towards their goal of graduating.
Gloria continues her studies in Geological Engineering at Colorado School of Mines in Colorado, USA and is scheduled to finish her coursework and graduate in May of 2022. Gloria has distinguished herself at Colorado School of Mines, not only in her scholarship, but also in her service work. Last year she was invited to be part of the Blue Key National Honor Society, thanks to her hard work and dedication to her academics. She made the Dean’s list at Mines and has developed an interest in Humanitarian Mining. Gloria has been named a research scholar on a project in responsible mining.
Maribel has made significant advances in her Accounting career at PUCP (La Catolica) in Lima. In December 2019, she completed her coursework at La Catolica and in March 2020 was accepted to undertake her required internship at PriceWaterhouseCoopers in Lima. After successfully completing her internship in October of 2020, Maribel was offered a full-time position within the auditing department at PWC in Lima. While she works at PWC and gains meaningful experience within her career field, she continues to research and work hard on writing her thesis. Maribel’s expectation is to defend her thesis and receive her title to become a certified accountant in Peru by April 2022.
Maria Fernanda (“Mafi”) continues her studies of Petrochemical Engineering at the National University (UNSAAC) in Cusco and expects to complete her university coursework in December of 2022. Mafi, along with some classmates, founded a chapter of the University Environmental Network at UNSAAC in Cusco. As someone passionate about the protection of the environment, Mafi wants to use her education and career to focus on ways to make mining more sustainable for our planet. She dreams to develop solutions for the harmful environmental impacts that mining, specifically the use of petrochemicals, makes in Peru and around the world, and wants to find new ways to innovate and improve current methodologies in her field to make them more environmentally sustainable.
These three scholars represent the larger group of 32 PH scholars who continue to develop into strong leaders and women who will change their futures and bring positive change to the world around them. Thank you for your ongoing commitment to girls’ education and empowerment in Peru. We are grateful for your loyalty and partnership and invite you to contact us to plan a trip to Peru to visit our scholars and PH team in Cusco. We will help make your visit meaningful and unforgettable.
