May is always a month were we honor the heroes in our lives. Mothers and grandmothers, care-takers and friends, for us is the opportunity to honor you as our silent hero, and share with one of many stories of mothers who face incredible odds to give their children a new opportunity to walk confidently and smile again.
One of these wonderful mothers is María Alejandra, her beautiful son Juan Jose, 2 years old, had his leg amputated at 8 months old due to a bad injection at a local clinic in his native Apartadó, a remote Colombian town next to the Pacific Ocean. What began as a routine check-up, ended with Juan Jose losing all circulation to one of his perfectly healthy legs when the botched injection cauterized one of his principal veins, changing his life and opportunities forever.
María Alejandra is a single mom, and works long hours at a local market to make ends meet. She barely has time to take care of her family and help Juan Jose with his special needs and it is almost impossible for her to get time off work to make the long lines and paperwork required to get Juan Jose the medical care he needs. She often works late nights and really early mornings so she can take time to take him to his doctor’s appointments.
This tireless mom fundraised for months to raise money for two bus tickets, to bring her child to to our offices in Medellín, almost an 8 hour trip, so we could help her wonderful, happy son to develop his muscles, walk, run and play. With your help we did not only gave Juan Jose a new leg so he can learn how to run, dance and play soccer, but also a new prostheses anytime he outgrows his old one in the future. This means no more long nights for mom and more time helping Juan Jose grow strong and happy.
Moms like María Alejandra and brave boys like Juan Jose, are an inspiration for us to work harder every day, to provide many more mothers and children with the help they so desperately need. So thank you, we are beyond grateful that you believe in us and our work and help us make dream a reality every day.
