Cultivating a Generation of Readers in Rural Indononesia

By Mufid | Teacher at Punthuk Sewu

Dear Our Valued Partners and Donors,

At Punthuk Sewu Learning Center, we believe that education begins with a single page. However, we face a significant challenge: Indonesia’s literacy index remains among the lowest globally. In rural areas like Bantul, access to engaging books is limited, and reading is often seen as a chore rather than a window to the world.

To change this narrative, we have launched a dedicated initiative: "Building the Reading Habit." We are not just teaching children how to read, but inspiring them to love reading.

Our Strategy to Transform Literacy

1. Diverse and Engaging Content Traditional textbooks can be intimidating. Instead, we introduce our students to the world of literature through:

  • Engaging Narratives: A curated collection of novels, fiction, and non-fiction.

  • Educational Comics: Using visual storytelling to simplify complex topics and attract reluctant readers.

2. From Reading to Understanding It is not enough to just finish a book; comprehension is key. We train our children to:

  • Finish what they start: Encouraging the discipline to read a book from cover to cover.

  • Retell and Reflect: After finishing a book, students explain the content in their own words, building their public speaking skills and critical thinking.

3. Bringing the Library Home To make reading a daily habit, we have set "Reading Targets." We allow children to take books home, ensuring that their learning environment extends beyond our center and into their households. This creates a ripple effect, often inspiring siblings and parents to take interest in the books brought home.

4. Celebrating Achievements We believe in the power of appreciation. Every time a child reaches their reading goal or successfully summarizes a complex story, we provide Apresiasi (Appreciation). This positive reinforcement builds their self-confidence and motivates them to pick up the next book.

Why Your Support Matters

By supporting this literacy program, you are helping us provide:

  • New, high-quality books for our library.

  • Support for reading mentors who guide the children.

  • A comfortable and well-lit reading space at the center.

Literacy is the foundation of the Eco-Vocational School we are building. A youth who reads is a youth who can innovate, lead, and transform their community’s economic and environmental future.

Thank you for giving these children the "gift of stories" and the power of knowledge.

With heartfelt gratitude,

The Punthuk Sewu Learning Center Team
