Dharmapuri Isha Vidhya school Science teacher
Mr. Vijayaraj conducted a learning session for the
5th grade students to reinforce their understanding
of the science lesson called “Animal Dwellings”.
The students were asked to enact wild animals,
wearing animal masks. The students acted the animal
activities that the animals do in the untouched forests
and also how the animals behaved in the diminishing
forests, and shrinking water bodies etc. The comparison
brought about the effects of humans encroachment
on the animals' habitats. Students spoke about reduced
food source for the animals, their migration towards
human settlements and the atrocities of poachers.
Mr. Vijayaraj shared : "I taught them about sanctuaries –
the protected areas for animals. I listed the ones in
Tamil Nadu and also those in the rest of the India, and
encouraged them to think of ways that animal habitats
could be protected. This encouraged the students to
discuss about creating awareness among people,
planting more trees, increasing forest areas, etc."
That session brought a lot of awareness about the
forests, animals plights, and what humans need to do
to protect the forests, etc. It's great that these children
get to know the importance of environment and
co-existence with all lives at such an young age !
