Growing vegetables, growing dreams

By Sophie Stephens | Digital Fundraiser

Can you imagine earning so little that you could barely survive?

This is what Namrata was facing every day. Her husband was an alcoholic and spent what little money they had on alcohol and was abusive to her whilst drinking.

Namrata bravely fled and managed to settle in a small house with her children and sisters. Yet, even though she had escaped her husband, her living situation was still dire.

She turned to the only work she could, struggling as a daily wage labourer to fund her family’s survival and her children’s education, her children's progress driving her to keep going.

Somehow, she managed to get her son and education up to age 16. Her determination and commitment paid off; her son now works abroad, sending funds back home, while her daughter is a market representative.

Education is truly life-changing for those who experience caste and gender-based discrimination.

Her children taken care of, Namrata yearned for a better life for herself, too. Adwan, our partner project in Nepal, meant that was within reach.

She joined one of their women’s groups and began training in agricultural farming, leadership, gender equality, rights and more. With these new skill sets, she was able to grow and bring home nutritious, organic food.

Now, she dreams of expanding this project and teaching other women how to farm and earn their own money and independence.

This project is changing how women are perceived in society. By uplifting their economic status, they can have a voice and be seen as leaders in their local communities. In doing so, we hope many more women can escape poverty and this can continue to grow - just like the vegetables!

Thank you for all you do; without your support, this project would simply not exist.
