Build Agrosilvopastoral Systems in Blora and Ngawi, Indonesia

By Misbachul Munir | Project Staff

In forest-adjacent villages in Blora (Central Java) and Ngawi (East Java), communities are working to restore degraded landscapes while strengthening rural livelihoods. These regions manage thousands of hectares of forest areas that face ongoing pressure from land degradation, economic vulnerability, and limited sustainable livelihood options.

Building an agrosilvopastoral system offers an integrated solution.

This model combines:

Forestry trees and conservation species to restore ecological balance
Agricultural crops such as coffee and spices for diversified income
Livestock (sheep farming) to strengthen household economies and support organic fertilizer production

Together, these components create a circular and resilient land-use system. Trees improve soil health and water retention. Crops provide short- and medium-term income. Livestock generates additional revenue while producing manure that is processed into organic fertilizer—reducing reliance on chemical inputs and lowering production costs.

In Blora and Ngawi, community groups have already begun this transition. Sheep grants strengthen economic foundations, agroforestry demonstration plots are expanding, and conservation areas are being prepared to protect biodiversity and water sources. The long-term goal is to transform forest landscapes into balanced systems where production and conservation coexist.

This is not just about planting trees.
It is about building systems that sustain both ecosystems and people.

Support the development of agrosilvopastoral systems in Blora and Ngawi.
Restore forests. Strengthen livelihoods. Build resilient rural futures.
